View Full Version : Degradation in first and last frame of each scene. How do I fix this?

I have an Anime with the first and last frame in each scene heavily degraded (the colors are wrong). During playback this results in flashes whenever the scene changes.

Anyway to fix this (maybe some filter that can replace the first frame with the second and the last frame with the one before)?

take a look at kassandro's "improvesceneswitch" for a quick fix - it does exactly as you described.

can i ask which title and region the anime is?

Thanks Mug Funky. It's He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe region1 (which I am trying to convert to region 2 - as I can't find a region2 version anywhere - yes not even on eBay!!). I know it's not exactly an anime but a cartoon.

I don't think you looked very hard... ;)

http://www.AlignFields.de.tf

but the site is dead. Do you have a better source?

Yes, 26 used and new and not one that will ship to my country.......besides that one is not even complete.

I did manage to find the filter but I had to go through a dozen pages on google. i don;t remember how I did that but I reuploaded it for you:

http://www.filemonster.net/file/1544/removedirt-25-dll-20040418-zip.html

And this filter works GREAT!!!

I reuploaded it for you...And this filter works GREAT!!!Well, thanks for that, I'm the first (and so far only) download!!!

I had seen comments about improvesceneswitch getting pulled-out of removedirt so it threw me off. In any case I'm gonna try it too.

Pentajet, those He-Man DVDs are available direct from Amazon.co.uk (as well as other sellers) - won't they ship to you? Amazon.com and Amazon.de have never had trouble shipping to the UK, so I'd hope the inverse is true (I do know .co.uk ships to Germany).

Well, in fact what I'd really like is the complete set of He-Man and She-Ra on 40 DVDs in GERMAN. I did manage to find a few of them but never a complete set - that's why I chose to get the US ones as they had all the He-Man series in 4 boxsets. Unfortunately the quality was not what I expected..........

About IMPROVESCREEN SWITCH. The DVD has bad scene changes for EVERY single scene on it. I checked all of them after ISS and it restored 99% of them. I had to switch it off (using trim) durind one single scene which had a lot of movement but even if I din't it would still be awesome. Obviously my source has almost 0 conetent with regards to fast motion (maybe an explosion every two episodes or so) so that might be why it worked so effectively.

Google search?
Hmm, it is at our Warpenterprise collection ;)

BTW, if somebody want more manual control, try my BadFrames plugin

http://www.avisynth.org/warpenterprises/Yes Fizick I went there first in fact, and a search/find on that page for either 'kassandro' or 'improvesceneswitch' as Mug Funky described the filter did not turn it up!

Yes today it is working for me as well; turns-out of course "improvesceneswitch" is not in there. Lots of outdated information on the web about that particular item...

BTW "BadFrames" looks like a useful plugin to try.

It's in the plugin RemoveDirt. I've attached the version i have. I'm not sure whether it's the latest version, and i don't have the source.

latest is 0.9

I followed from fizick's Page (http://avisynth.org.ru/docs/english/externalfilters/removedirt.htm) to http://www.removedirt.de.tf/ . The site is online and have the Version 0.9 for download. But the Documentary of the Plugin does not describe "ImproveSceneSwitch". I guess kassandro removed the Function from RemoveDirt-Package. Since this function was not developed (i think) the last versions of removedirt the version 0.6 should be ok.

a note on He-Man and She-Ra:

they were remastered in progressive PAL. so the discs you have will be converted to NTSC (meaning blended fields, difficulty in making good backups).

also, a very heavy (i think) motion compensated temporal median has been run on them. you can see some warpage on the Filmation logo as the shimmering bright thing goes over it, stepping through the frames. also, details will disappear in moving scenes (and mouths can disappear in talking scenes). that aside it looks pretty good.

if you want the best possible version, i'd look into getting a PAL version. the R4's are pretty good, i don't know about the others. none are ideal because some of the crazy scenes are a bit too hard for MPEG-2 to handle (look at the blocks when Cringer turns into Battlecat in every episode).

Although I am a dumb newbie I managed to get rid of ALL (or 99% say)of the blocks during the BattleCat transformation!!

The lines that disappear on moving scenes are there even on the PAL version (I do have the original German version of SOTS).

No temporal median or anything else has been applied to the discs. If you leakkernelbob it and apply one of these operators:

.selectevery(12,2,4,7,9,11)
.selectevery(12,3,5,8,10,12)
.selectevery(12,1,4,6,9,11)
.selectevery(12,5,7,10,12)
.selectevery(12,3,6,8,11)

the result will be a PERFECT Pal with not a single blend and the most possible fluid motion during pans and zooms. One of those five ALWAYS works. BUT problem is it only works for about 100-300 frames then it stops working and you have to go to the next. For example if (12,2,4,7,9,11) works for the first 225 frames and stops working on 226 then you have to go to (12,3,5,8,10,12) which will work say from 226 to 436 then it stops and you have to go to the next one and so on......

And if anybody wants to suggest to do this manually.........its's 195 episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And ImproveSceneSwitch is in the folder I uploaded. The plugin is not called Improvesceneswitch.dll but removedirt.dll.

oh, cool. the german one is progressive too? that's good.

even though they were remastered in PAL, you can't guarantee they wont assume all countries are NTSC land and force the Germans to convert... that happens in australia all the time.

one thing you'll find is the animated menus generally are converted from NTSC, and the motion footage in the NTSC version is converted from PAL :). fine old mess.

would you mind sharing with us how you got rid of the blocks on battlecat? perhaps it's just the encoder cards here that buggered it up?

Sure! I simply used two directshowfilters DeBlock set at 35% and DeBand set at 1.95. It slightly blurred the picture but it got rid of the problem. Then I allocated manually 9800Kb/s to all scenes where BattleCat transforms (roughly there are 8 per DVD - no big deal). On some of the DVDs the scenes were really (example Teela's Quest) bad so on a couple of instances I used transformations from "The Best Of" which are slightly superior in quality (the trasfomations are always identical in every episode - they are literally one a copy of the other) - then I used colourlike to match the scenes to those on "best of"

I'm a bit confused about it myself, but aren't you suppose to subtract your audio bitrate from 9800kbps to set your maximum bitrate?
