I'm trying to run 1080p hdtv samples. I have an amd 3700 and 1.5gb ram, also 7600gt with latest forceware. The hd at 1080p doesn't run smoothly... Should it with such a computer or does one need a better cpu...?

Depends on the decoder - QuickTime's mov files require more CPU power because of rather poor efficieny of the decoder. MP4s (x264, Nero Digital, Elecard etc.) are usually better handled (e.g. by ffdshow that I use).

Example: BBC Nature clips from QuickTimes website, 1240x720, unplayable in the original format, renamed to mp4 - no dropped frames, CPU at 60-70%. :)

I've only mentioned AVC, because those are the only samples of HD material I own. I don't know how your stuff has been encoded.

Right. Your system has easily enough horsepower to decode 1080p MPEG-2, and also MPEG-4 ASP and AVC with a slick decoder like CoreAVC.

I have also installed suse 10.2 on my pc. This file still doesn't play. But using mencoder I can modify it to run, but then it's converted.
I normally use mpc in windows sp2. I have put coreavc into the overrides list, normally I have ffdshow. I also have the nStant Media player, which still cannot play this smoothly. The sound breaks up and sometimes if not using a nice codec the picture breaks up. I have seen this clip run on a laptop with a duo + 1gb ram and some ati card with 512MB vram, is at near top end model graphics card. I don't have the full spec, but it ran at 50% or so load playing smoothly. The only other thought I had was maybe the power supply isn't giving enough current. Thats a northq 400 watt. But there isn't really enough things attached to cause such a problem. It's possible I just haven't some configuration set somewhere. I have a file, suse made with the system info but I have to edit out any security risk stuff.

It also depends on the graphic card you have.

I can play back 1080i60 without any judder at full field rate (60fps) with software decoding only with an Athlon-XP 1600+ @ 1.5 GHz.
So there is no graphics card acceleration used.

That's a lot of data for the hard drive to transfer - it may just be balking at the data rate.

Compressed HDTV commonly maxes out at data rates of about 25 Mbps. This equals 3 MB/s. Every nearly recent HDD is able to transfer at least 40 MB/sec od sequential data...
