View Full Version : --no-dct-decimate and animated content

A while back I read somewhere on this forum (I think MeGui forums but not sure, also can't find the thread again) that --no-dct-decimate should not be used with animated content.
I had a look at Sharktooth's profiles and it isn't used.
So I was just wondering what the reason was why it shouldn't be used? According to my tests it improves SSIM.

no-dct-decimate improves SSIM, but no-fast-pskip or trellis seems to "work better".
there was a test in the german forum:
http://forum.gleitz.info/showthread.php?t=27423&page=9

at the bottom you find a table where you can compare the different combinations of no-dct-decimate, no-fast-pskip, trellis.
for fast encoding just use no-fast-pskip alone, for better quality use trellis1 + no-fast-pskip.
there was a test for crf and 2-pass: no-dct-decimate seems to raise quality sometimes, but sometimes lowers quality.
with no further tests i would not use it on any movie.
but i cant see the connection to anime ?
at least there are only little measurable differences between these algorithms ...

According to this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=115604), --no-dct-decimate is similar to --no-fast-pskip and should be enabled when using Trellis.

According to that thread --no-dct-decimate makes no difference except in some particular cases otherwise it will increase the filesize that's something that hurts compressibility thus quality (at a fixed bitrate)...
