View Full Version : PAL to NTSC DVD [Full Disc] Conversion (hybrid method, very easy) GUIDE(by me)

This guide will teach you how to create an NTSC DVD, from a PAL DVD (or vice versa) using a combination of actual converting, and DJRumpy's patch method (http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=221928). It is slightly more complicated than his method but I believe you will be overall much more satisfied with the end result.

I would say this is the second easiest way in existance to convert a full dvd menu's and all and still have a decent quality disc.
[Side note, if converting NTSC to PAL, just flip flop the two words (Pretend PAL means NTSC and NTSC means PAL) and it will work just the same.]

Please start with this guide first.

Programs needed:
Dvd Santa (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=dvdsanta&Submit=Search)
Vob Blanker (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=580)
Ifoedit (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=9#comments)
Dvd Shrink (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=155)

Part 1

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-2/110498/ds1.jpg

STEP 1: Select Add Media, and select the video_ts file inside of your PAL dvd by clicking your D drive once on the menu, if the PAL DVD is not region free you will have to first rip it to the hard drive and convert it into a video ts file. (inside the ts file you need only click the first thing listed and it will automatically add the main video of the disc to dvd santa)

STEP 2: Select the format and ratio you want your new video only video_ts file to be

STEP 3: Select the destination for your new video_ts video only file

STEP 4: Push the create DVD button to begin making your new folder

STEP 5 OPTIONAL: Add subtitles to the vob video or forever hold you peace, you won't be able to add them again unless you intend on splicing them in once the dvd is complete.

Once dvdsanta finishes its PAL to NTSC (or vice versa) conversion of the main video, it should have created a fresh new video_ts folder

NOTE: Dvd santa will only rip the main audio stream from your DVD video, you you wish for it to rip an alternate audio stream, open dvd shrink in reauthor mode and change the default audio stream of the main movie before opening it in dvdsanta. If you wish to add multiple audio streams to the main video you will have to use a different guide to add it in once the dvd is complete.

Part 2

STEP 6: Open the original pal dvd, complete with menu's in dvdshrink, and select no compression for all attributes, and push the backup button to a folder of your choice.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-2/110498/dvdshrink1.JPG

Once this is done, you will have a second video_ts folder containing the original PAL DVD, menu's and all.

Part 3

STEP 7: Take the new video_ts file, complete with menu's and open it in vob blanker as (input), and select output wherever you wish the new third video_ts file to be.
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-2/110498/vb2.JPG

STEP 8: Select the main video (usually the largest file), and it will appear in the second bar down below, scroll over to "REPLACE" then select the video from the first[b] video_ts that you converted with dvd santa. Press the "PROCESS!!" Button and wait for your new patched video_ts file to be created.
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-2/110498/rprp.JPG

[b]Part 4
Take the newly patched video_ts file into ifoedit, use DJRumpy's patch method (http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=221928) to patch the menu's, extras and any remaining PAL content on the disc, unless you prefer to convert the extras as well.

Part 5
Open the final video_ts file in dvd santa, or other program of your choice and burn, Since your just patching menu's (which dont move) and optionally extras, although you can use the same method for converting them as the main video, if you choose to do so.

And behold your fully functional (mostly) NTSC dvd that will work in almost any player without hiccups or jerkyness! (Although on some players you menu make shake a little, but WHO CARES!)

Hello again,

Are you hoping for a better reception over here?

http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1639555#1639555Honestly I don't care what your opinion on my method is, I will continue to fight senseless objections and stick to my opinion that this method is good and completely viable.

I have posted this on as many video forums as possible, not just doom9 and videohelp, and will continue to do so and support my guides despite objections and criticism.

@LadyLiete

Hi!Honestly I don't care what your opinion on my method isAs a member with an opinion regarding just about everything posted at these forums, I'm offended by your post.

Your declaration may be the most antagonistic and hostile self-introduction by a new member that I've ever read!

One could speculate that you relish inciting flaming - perhaps to call more attention to this thread.

It sounds like you're anticipating criticism and comments, constructive or otherwise, and are unwilling to accept it or deal with it in a civil manner.

If so, why would you bother posting here?

I registered at this site september 2005, although I don't post much I don't consiter myself a new member (although I am on videohelp). manono has criticised my method extensively on the videohelp forum, and I was expecting him to do the same here.

To put it simpally ive already gone through so much criticism, nagging and even to the point of being flamed (check out FulciLives comments on videohelp). I am not impatient, I am not rude, but even the calmest of people can only be pushed so far by the same person.

I am not impatient, I am not rude, but even the calmest of people can only be pushed so far. This is Doom9's Forum, not related in any way to "Videohelp".

It seems you're unable to leave your "baggage" of ill will at "Videohelp" where it was created. There's no reason to bring it to this Forum.

BTW - If you're intent on posting your concepts at a forum frequented by, from what I've seen here, extremely knowledgable people - some with "colorful" personalities - you should be certain that you have a "thick skin", because all such postings are subject to intense scrutiny and evaluation.

If it's too much for you to cope with ("the calmest of people can only be pushed so far"), I would again ask you, why bother posting?

(My last question was rhetorical and requires no response)

They have video quality standards so high its not humanly imaginable. People who call dvdsanta trash, a second rate encoder and a dev toy are probably the same ones that watch all there movies on blueray with a plasma screen HD tv and 6.1 surround and write to the developers if there is a nick of imperfection on the video.

I am not opposed to new criticisms, but hearing the same one from the same person over and over again just annoys me beyond imagination. His initial reply to this thread was a subliminal mockery of the same thread on videohelp.

Why bother posting? To spread the new method I came up with, I don't care if a few people don't like it im not going to hide it from the majority because of there opinions.

One can still notice the flaws in substandard transcoders/encoders on smaller tvs, which would be a worry if one then bought an expensive large tv, took a backup out of the (large) collection, and ooops...one is in trouble.

Re patching etc, breaching dvd spec can also come back and bite one in the arse.

Before I read the posts at videohelp I was surprised someone who even didn't know what CCE was would suddenly started to write a guide. Even without all these critics I would not give it a try. I don't want to repeat others opinions and this is what I feel as you are expecting responses from not just a few people.

LadyLiete

I know what CCE is, and I have it on my hard drive for almost a week, I just do not use it for many purposes. You are making assumptions off of idiots who made even more assumptions.

It annoys me that people think I am so dumb that I do not know about the dozens of encoders out there... I just do not like there complex methods.

Yo, power to you for doing something... Anything really... I dunno about the quality, but many people need to start somewhere... I also used similiar programs... Which after some time led me to more complex programs, etc...

So, while I dunno what the quality would be, I sure think it's great that you wrote SOMETHING :).

Peace ;).

Im not a total noob as many people seem to think I am, that was just my target audience when making this guide.

I have alot more complex programs on my desktop myself.
