View Full Version : Pioneer DVD menu hang – how to fix

I have a DVD,

Damien Leith, Australian Idol
Sony BMG
Region 0

that hangs trying to display the menu on my Pioneer DV-533K. I ripped the DVD (DVDDecrypter) and reburnt the DVD to see if that made any difference - still hangs the Pioneer trying to display the menu. Following the Doom9 DVDShrink reauthor guides, I then reauthored with just the content (no menu), burnt it and that DVD plays on the DV-533K. The original DVD plays on other set-top DVD players.

I’ve used InfoEdit and PgcEdit to have a look around but it doesn’t mean much to me.

Question. Can I somehow reauthor keeping/fixing the menu and get the DVD to play?

If anyone has the time to help guide me through trying to fix the menu I would be most appreciative. I can post InfoEdit or PgcEdit screen captures but don’t know exactly what to capture.. I’m a novice so please be kind.

hi Phred and welcome to the forum!

sorry for not getting around to this thread earlier - its been a busy week.

anyways, there are many probable reasons for your menu issues (and no i wont make any jokes about australian idol :p), however the way i would go about fixing this may not be the simplest approach ...
as you have expressed a desire to learn pgc_edit etc, i will move this thread to the ifo/vob editors forum, where hopefuly one of the gurus there can guide you through its uses.

Use the Jump to PGC function in PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html). Guide on site.

Isn't it possible that it's arcoss protected, seeing as it's a Sony release?

Hi!Sony BMG, Region 0Perhaps I'm mistaken but, I'm not aware of SONY releasing ANY DVDs as "Region 0". Is this an original, commercial, pressed DVD? If not, perhaps that's the reason for your problem...

Yes, it’s a full commercial DVD from a national retailer. The back of the jewel case says PAL Region 0. When I fire up DVD Decrypter:

Firing up PgcEdit and pointing at the files extracted by DVDDecrypter, Pgc Edit pops up a dialogue box that says “DVD Opened OK 1 VTS loaded” with scan set to 1 VOBUs and Check for multiple sets of BOVs is ticked. DVD -> Region Code has all regions ticked. “Search for “sprm(20:Player region code)” in DVD commands when I hit ok PcgEdit pops up a dialogue box that says “Found “sprm(20:Player Region code).., however, highlights no cells with the code. Manually looking at all the code don't see a sprm(20. Perhaps a PgcEdit bug?

Such a DVD is unlikely to be region coded. Guess the content is not of regional significance.

As I said in my original post, the DVD works/plays just fine on other DVD players (the stores DVD player is one such player) - it doesn't play on my Pioneer DV-533K. Further, a straight copy, without making any menu changes, using DVDDecrypter exhibits the same symptoms - hangs trying to display the menu on my Pioneer DV-533K.

I'm hoping that someone can spot what might be the problem with the menu that the Pioneer doesn’t like and be able to help me fix the problem but still retain the ability to select the individual episodes via a menu.

The nav looks simple and is fine (it plays 34 seconds of crap - warnings probably and then jumps to VTSM 1,1 with button 1 highlighted). Might be time to give your player's laser a clean.

3 things i know of that cause stuffups on pioneer players (and only pioneer players):

- menu audio has been encoded with an old build of ac3enc or similar
- video has been compressed-domain transcoded (by rejig for example) and you've come across a static scene.
- some imgburn issue that as yet isn't repeatable (a guy at work found this, but we've been unable to reproduce the problem on another title).

the first and third points affect menus only, the second can cause errors anywhere on a disc that there's recompressed video.

the guys at sony should have burnt a disc and tested it on a pioneer - it's no secret that these players have loads of issues and are thus good testing machines (the older the better).

i'm not saying pioneer players are crap or anything - in fact i like them a lot. they just keep DVD authors on their toes :devil:

my suggestion is to rip the disc, re-make the menu using some other ac3 encoder or some other video encoder (or both), and burn a test on a rewritable disc. if you use aften for the audio, let me know how it turns out (i'd like to use it for personal projects and don't have a pioneer player at home :)).

given that this disc was probably rushed out by the Sony Moneymaking Machine (TM), you could have any of the above problems except the imgburn one (DDP images are used for replication, not DVD-Rs with VIDEO_TS structures, so imgburn isn't useful here).

best tell sony about this issue too - tell them exactly what playback issue you have (ie "menu not loading"), and what model of player you have. don't tell them you ripped it or anything - they probably wouldn't like hearing that... this will hopefully lead them to find the problem and adjust their workflow accordingly. that is if they're smart enough to reproduce the problem and track down the cause...

just "thought of" another possible cause... menu is on layer1 (ie the second layer). doesn't seem at all likely, but who knows?

Where dose the first highlighted item go to exactly ...

Depending on command's used , it could be routed to point directly to the actual menu for the dvd title instead of going via the junk first ... just need to check the commands used leading from vmg first play pgc > title menu .

The two remaining highlighted item's ... I have seen that and had a problem with one player before ... it's a "contradiction" in term's ... why set it for both pre and post .

If it is junk , remove the pre command is the safer option .

I would personally reorganise the content using pgcedit , so the menu is on layer 1 ... less problem's , and use imgburn only ... simple once you now how to use pgcedit to do this .

On most DVDs, the nav follows a complex structure before ending to the real menu. You can easily skip that junk with the Jump2PGC Upon DVD Insert function of PgcEdit.

Nothing to worry here. That PGC has probably been killed by VobBlanker or PgcEdit. The first pre-command will jump directly to the root menu, and therefore the post command cannot be executed.
It is true that one of those commands is useless, but that doesn't hurt. You can safely remove the pre or post command. As it's a dummy PGC, nothing will be played anyway.
