Max I-Frame interval while Bobbing

Hi folks,

I was hoping someone could clarify a question I have regarding the Max I-Frame interval setting.

The question is I'm not sure what to set the value to when I'm bobbing using an AVS filter such as Leakkernelbob(). If my original content is PAL 25fps and I bob, this essentially gives me 50fps output. So would I then set my maximum I-frame interval to 500? Likewise for an NTSC 30fps movie, I would set the max I-frame interval to 600? I never found a definitive thread or post discussing this. Many thanks for any advice.

10s is just a suggestion that originally traded off lousy seek time for better compression. Now it doesn't matter, unless you make HD rips into AVC/VC-1, where decoding speed feels like 1999 all over again.

500 frames will take at most nearly twice as long to seek through, but it'll certainly compress a little better if you have few scenecuts. Test your system; make a representative 5 minute clip with different max intervals and see how much lag you find in seeking around.

(I like to use 40s in ASP, and 18s in AVC, because I have a good system and the codec will almost always use a lower one anyway. Efficiency matters more to me than seekability.)

Strictly using ASP here and you just made me very happy :-) I honestly had no idea all these years that the value never really affected compressibility in a negative way. Like you, my system will be plenty fast enough and typically I never really seek through a movie. Time to make some test clips...
