Lines in WMV3

I encode WMV3-files. How do I know how many lines Im using? as in 720p and so on.

I don't understand the question. If you're the one encoding the files, don't you know the resolution of your sources?

yes, but I dont get the whole 720p-thing. Doesnt it tell you how many lines the file uses?

720p means the file will be x_resolution*720 progressive (non-interlaced).

1080i means 1920x1080 interlaced.

So if you encode a DVD you deinterlaced to 640*480, you'll be producing a "480p" (as in 640*480 progressive) file.

If it's interlaced, it will be 360i, if it's progressive, it's 360p ^^

It's easy, but you need to get used to it.

I don't think you could call that 360p. I mean, sure, it makes sense, but 480i/p, 576i/p, 720i/p, 1080i/p, are the names for a specific set of television and broadcast standards. They encompass certain heights (of course), widths, frame rates, and other digital TV aspects, so that broadcasts play the same way on all conforming screens.

Computers play fast and loose with the standards and invent a lot of their own, since they can play just about anything, but if you were to say "360p" to mean a video file with 360 lines, you run the risk of causing confusion (or worse, mockery).

On that subject... "Lines" in video talk typically refers to analog video. Digital video is usually discussed in terms of "resolution", as in "width x height".
