I've got an avi that only plays audio with MPC, won't load at all into VDub, or WMP, etc, but it plays audio/video ok in VLC.
gSpot says file format unknown. I read that I can look into the RIFF Headers so how do I use John McGowans VidTrace program please.

I'm sorry, but this just begs for the question "where did you get it from?". I sense an increasing number of more-or-less well-disguised calls for help with P2P-downloaded files lately, so that's why I ask.

BTW, in order to load a video in VDub or play it in MPC you need to have installed the codec that has been used for encoding the file, while VLC has an in-built set of codecs.

A family member uploaded it from which I downloaded it. It is of relatives overseas, I don't know how it was encoded to avi and can't ask as she is returning home now but I won't see her for some time.
So is there any link to my original question of how to use VidTrace please so that I can determine from the RIFF what codec it is supposed to have been encoded with.

This is precisely why I need to look into the Header to see what encoder was used. VidTrace can do this but I can't work out how to use it, nothing happens when I click it, surely one of the multitude of experts here must have used this?
