wmv3 in avi won't play

Hi

I have a video file that angel potion reports to be wmv3 video in an avi file. This file won't play in Media Player Classic, WMP or VLC.

Can anyone please advise on the best way to get this video file playing?

you most likely need to install the wmv9vcm binary, assuming the file has not become corrupt.

hi, thanks for the reply, i tried the wmv9 vcm codec with no change. if we assume the file isn't corrupted, what other options are their?

Filter 2: WMVideo Decoder DMO <--- it is some flavor of WMV. If this is the only file that doesn't play, chances are it's corrupt.
If you suspect this isn't the case, use the Insurgent to post the media information for the file.

It's better to not use Haali's splitter for avi files.

Well, if it were me I'd open in GSpot ;)

Seriously, though, besides reporting if it's truncated or has other structural issues, since the file the theoretically "renders" (as I see from above posts) then it should also do so if you press the MS A/V button #1 in GSpot. Then hover the mouse over the mediatype going into the decoder to confirm it's WMV3, and likewise hover the cursor over the decoder itself. Other things you can do are press #2 and see if it plays in the small window, and also check System -> Codecs for anything lines shaded red which indicate potential problems.

I noticed the test render above shows the "decoder" as "qasf.dll" & gives the info for that file, but "qasf" is actually sort of a "wrapper" for all DMO decoders - so that info is not as meaningful as one would like. That's why in GSpot you should see "qasf->WMVDECOD.DLL" or something along those lines, as in the screenshot below. If you right click on it for "item details" it'll show you the info for latter file - the actual decoder - rather than the generic qasf "wrapper".

Not sure any of this will solve your problem, if GSpot says everything's OK, I'd be curious to get a sample of the file if at all possible.

Hi, I tried registering the dll but it didn't resolve the issue.

Based on the indicated "odd resolution" of 302x255 and the use of PCM audio with WMV3 video (not to mention the blacked out title), I'd suggest to you that this is likely a fake file...

Oh, I'm sorry to be the one to have to tell you this, but there is no video in that file - none to speak of, anyway.

Just some headers indicating what how many frames and of what type they should/would be if they weren't all empty (they're all AVI "drop" frames or something similar).

Besides the more obvious indications in the screenshot (e.g. that the audio comprises 98.99% of the file, or that the video bitrate is only 6kbps - much, much too low for any kind of video), you can also just multiply it out the audio part:

The audio is apparently uncompressed PCM (i.e. "wav") audio at 22050 samples/sec * 16 bits/sample * 2 channels (stereo), which is a bit rate of 705,600 bits/sec (shown by GSpot as 706kbps), and the file is 21 min 7sec long (1267 seconds).

(705600 bits/sec times * 1267 seconds) / 8 bits per byte is 106MB of your 107MB file. The renaming 1 MB or is your 1% overhead and the "empty" frames.

You could no doubt demux the sound out to a 106 MB .wav file and listen to your 21 min of audio, but whoever made that file totally screwed up & basically left out all the video, so I wouldn't waste any more time with it.
