Hi,

This is my first time trying to create an AVI file out of a DVD. I have heard of good review of the freeware AutoGK from BetaNews forum so I would like to give it a try. I start directly with v2.40.

I have read various FAQa nad Tutorial, it helps a lot of course but still the whole process still seems complicated. For example, The FAQ say select the input files. But where are they? Should I point directly to the DVD or should I copy from DVD to hard drive? I guess I have to rip the files out of the DVD so I have tried DVD Decrypter as mention in the software list of the FAQ.

When I reach step 4 and hit the start button. The encoding process is indeed very lengthy. AutoGK call a lots of external programs that I don't know what they are for and why are they necessary. Can you please give me a quick explanation as why AutoGK need these softwares:

- DGIndex
- VirtualDub
- AVISynth

Trying to understand VirtualDub, I see that this is a video capture utility. I don't capture any video. The video is already on the DVD. Why is this step necessary?

Sorry for such silly questions. I have zero knowledge in the video area.

Thanks in advance for your help.

remember that the search fuction and lurking around is always your friends

quickly answer:

yes, you must rip. use ripit4me www.ripit4me.org

dgindex: will build the index of frames of movie, absolutly necessary (working time: 10 minutes , about) www.neuron2.net

virtualdub: will encode the movie. POINT. (working time: 100 minutes to several hours) www.virtualdub.org

avisynth: the frameserver, the key between virtualdub and dgindex www.avisynth.org

yes, you must rip.
...sometimes. Most movie disks with no advanced copy protection, i. e. Ripguard or ARccOS (found on some Universal, Sony and Disney titles) will not have a problem when encoded directly from the DVD. Episodic disks must be pre-ripped with something like DVD Decrypter in .IFO mode in order to separate the episodes. Some multi-angle movie disks will also need to be pre-ripped to prevent all the various angles of the movies from being encoded into one linear file. setarip_old has posted a brief and helpful method to tell what pre-processing the disk needs.

Can you please give me a quick explanation as why AutoGK need these softwares:

- DGIndex
- VirtualDub
- AVISynth
It is those softwares (along with BeSweet, which encodes the audio when using MP3) that does all the work. AutoGK is just a GUI (graphical user interface) that simplifies the input of the files and the setup of the process. They are all necessary, and if any one of them were missing the process would fail.

Thank you to all of you for your advices. I have learnt ripit4you as buzzqw suggested. And have been able to encode some CSI episodes so far.

Ripping and Encoding DVD is really much more complex than what I expected. I thought it is similar to creating MP3 from CD. At the begining I was overwhelmed and confused be too many different utilities that come in play in the process. Especially when their names don't reflect their function. For example, Ripit4Me is not a ripper but rather a protection hack. DVD Decrypter is not a decrypter but a ripper. DVD Shrink doesn't shrink but copy the DVD extract to a blank DVD.

Or surely enough I don't understand yet all these programs. Nevertheless these names are confusing.

I have also heard of AnyDVD which seems to do the same thing than Ripit4Me. Are they really functionally comparable? Sorry this is off topic with regards to AutoGK but I would appreciate if you can give me some hints so I could better focus to read further the documentation. My need is very simple, I want to encode CSI episodes in AVI for backup and to view these AVI on my Digital Audio Player (Insignia NS-DV4G).

Thanks in advance.

"Ripping" is the process of copying the data from one format to another, whether it's DVD video to your hard disk or directly encoding it from the disk to an .AVI file. RipIt4Me is in fact a ripper, although it's really just a GUI front-end for the tools it uses to perform the actual work. DVD Decrypter not only "rips" the material to your drive, it first decrypts the CSS protection. DVD Shrink is another multi-purpose tool that also shrinks a full DVD-9 (dual-layer original) to a DVD-5 (single-layer disk).

AnyDVD doesn't copy files to your drive, it only unlocks them so you can copy them yourself. You can use DVD Decrypter with it to rip the files, or open them from the disk with DVD Shrink. One of its advantages is that it can eliminate the need for ripping prior to encoding; its main drawback is that it's not free. It's not really comparable to RipIt4Me because it doesn't function in the same way.

In most cases, the easiest way to get from an episodic DVD to an .AVI file is to rip each episode individually with DVD Decrypter in .IFO mode and encode them with AutoGK. There are some episodic DVDs with advanced copy protection, in which case you can use RipIt4Me to create an .ISO image stripped of the ACP, then mount the image and rip with DVD Decrypter in .IFO mode.

Hi, So you are not a first time AGK user isn't it?

Your question could benefit to others if you had created a new thread (which you still can do if necessary); in this thread it's kind of hijacking :sly:

Try to de-install (if still present) your divx codec and re-install it (same version). Avoid by all means codec packs. If no good create a new thread for more help.
