This is a new muxer and encoder for the Windows Media Format. WMVMuxer comes with features not found in other WMV encoders, like AVI (WMV) to WMV conversion without reencoding, as needed for XBox 360 playback and access to the conversion graph.

The key features are:

- DirectShow based, mux/encode any format you have filters for
- Demux, mux, encode and direct stream copy modes
- Uses the ASF Writer for compliant streams, that play on PC, XBox and Sigma chips
- Encodes using profiles (predefined and custom) to VC-1, WMV, WMA, ASF
- Access to the conversion graph using Graphedit

I will, but it is not possible to have a predefined profile for every use. The ones you mentioned however, seem to be popular. The idea is to create custom profiles as needed. You can create them by deriving from one of the predefined. Use the profile editor that comes with WME9 or a text editor.

Works great, just transcoded a 1080p WMVHD down to
320x240 for a portable WM9 media player.

Open a command windows in the filters folder and enter the following command:

P.S. The dump filter is only used when demultiplexing

Is it able to convert a 5.1 AC3 to WMA without crapping out on me like WME9 does, unless i have a very specific AC3 decoder installed (think it was the WinDVD decoder)?

For example, i use Nvidia's PureVideo decoder for DVD playback, but WME9 crashes if i try to convert a 5.1 AC3 to WMA although a 2-channel AC3 works just fine.

I had no constant results in encoding 5.1 AC3 to WMA Pro. I am using AC3filter. The Dolby Prologic II downmix always works when encoding to wma2, but the wma pro codec seems to be picky. I am still checking, if something more is needed. If someone has details about this, let me know.

Hmm, I'm having trouble demuxing and ds copying streams from one container to another. Sometimes it gives me a catastrophic failure, and sometimes it just crashes in qasf.dll. Did you test this on v10 or v11 SDK? I've only tried it on v10 so far.

Also, the profile concept is somewhat confusing. Why is a profile for muxing necessary?

I did my tests on SDK v11. All AVIs (WMV + AC3) could be multiplexed to WMV. In the first step I demuxed the AC3 audio and ds copied the WMV video to WMV. I then coded the audio in WMA and muxed both streams with the Windows Media Stream Editor.

What sample and what profile caused the crash? Can you give details or samples?

The profile is necessary for data, that is not available from the AVI source. If you compare the streams in ASFView from wmvmuxer and other asf muxers, you will see that important objects are missing in the other streams. The missing device conformance templates and codec list objects can cause probs on the Sigma chip, and when streaming and when using other WMV tools.

I admit it is unusual to have a profile for muxing and I am thinking of alternatives.

As another little bug, I noticed it doesn't handle unicode filenames well. Trying to load Sonim - 후애(後愛).wmv (Mixed Korean and Japanese filename) shows in the log as Failed to load C:\asami\Sonim - ??(後愛).wmv Japanese is my system's default language, so all Japanese and iso-8859-01 filenames load fine, but anything outside of those two doesn't.

thanks for testing. It seems I need to switch to unicode to support mixed languages like Korean and Japanese. That's on my list now.

I had a look at your sample. It is already in wmv format. Demuxing audio gives you a raw wma stream which is probably not what you want. If you want just the wma audio, you'd better use the Stream Editor from WME9 to demux it.

Anyway it didn't crash here. I used direct stream copy for the video and demux for the audio and a profile similar to yours.

P.S. I couldn't display the png with the error.

Image worked fine when I checked it just now. Probably just a hiccup with imageshack when you went to look at it.

And I think I misunderstood what the demux option was for. I guess I expected the streams to be dumped either raw or into a non-WMV container format. I was using demux for both the video and audio when I got that error message. I take it that it's only for taking wmv audio/video content from other containers and putting them in a wmv container?

I second that - the current design is somewhat confusing. Traditionally demux (in apps like DGIndex or DVD Decrypter) means that the contained streams are dumped to their own containers or raw files.

It cannot be used as a DirectShow filter, but it is built around Microsoft's WM ASF Writer filter, which probably is the component you are looking for.

The idea behind wmvmuxer is exactly like this. Take the WM ASF Writer, set a profile and render the media to convert. Thus in theory every file, that can be rendered, can be encoded.

However to validate the input, MediaLib is used. Some input unknown to MediaLib is rejected although it would render and convert. The next version will allow to bypass the validation.

Doing so I was able to reencode a VC1 file in wmvmuxer to a lower bitrate wmv which still looked great.

Thank you for your quick answer Crypto. That's great news! I can't wait! For the moment I'm stuck with a .avs for my audio and another .avs for my video and I don't know how to merge (maybe mux is the right word here?!) the two into a WMV HD file. Unfortunately, I read there were bugs with VirtualDub under Windows Vista, that's why I thought of WMV muxer. I also looked into WME Assistant, but it seems that this progie uses only one .avs as source so I don't know how to use it with 2 .avs source files (one for the audio and the other for the video). I am basically trying to find the easiest way to convert HD-DVD EVO files to WMV HD. I will be posting all my findings in the Doom9 - Newbies forum. Thanks again for your help.

You should put video and audio into one avs and use the audiodub (video, audio) command.

You can also encode video and audio seperately and mux wmv and wma using the Windows Media Stream Editor from the WME9 package.

One question leading to another (sorry!)...

1) How should I change .avs file containing the following?
video = AviSource("file.avi") to video = somethingSource("file.avs")
audio = WavSource("file.wav") to audio = somethingSource("file.avs")
AudioDub(video,audio)

This may not be a good option though, because I would then have to use WME Assistant which isn't free!

2) In my .grf files for audio and video, I respectively use InterVideo Audio Decoder and Intervideo Video Decoder, but I don't know what the output formats are for these two decoders! Would you have an idea?

3) Which encoder(s) would you use to convert .avs to .wma and .avs to .wmv?

Just examples... You could preview in VirtualDub, look at File Information in the File menu, and then you would know what the output is, and could modify the script if necessary.

Thank you so much DarkNite. Most helpful. I tried the "import" script and then opened it in VirtualDub. Worked like a charm except that the vidoe isn't centered (possibly has to be tweaked!). I also looked at the File Info. It seems that the audio is uncompressed PCM, but I'm not sure about the video?

I've then tried to convert the .avs script file to WMV HD using WME Assistant. Unfortunately, it crashes! Would you have any idea how I may convert the .avs to .wmv?

Since most of the scripts I've been having to use lately are very processor intensive (you could also read that as "slow") I've been saving the output of the script as a lossless avi and feeding that to WME.

I haven't had any issues with WME Assistant since I've started using the version 1.16.1.xxxx builds. WMCmd.vbs (http://www.citizeninsomniac.com/WMV/#WMCmd) is a good option to have. Your command line will be a lot shorter if you already have a session, or profile saved and can just import that.

Wmcmd.vbs is really easy to use. Just make a text file, rename it with a .bat extension, and put all your parameters in it (input file, output file, codec, bitrate, etc -- all the options are listed in the readme that comes with it). Doubleclick the .bat and there you go. It's actually much faster and easier than any of the encoding programs (WME, TMPGEnc, Procoder) after the first time you use it.

@jubiles: Thanks for the encouragement! You're right, it's quite easy to use. The difficult part is figuring out what parameters to use.

I used the following script:
cscript.exe "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\wmcmd.vbs" -input "C:\Path to my AVS file\sourcefilename.avs" -output "C:\test.wmv" -v_codec WMV9 -v_mode 2 -v_bitrate 6000000 -v_keydist 30 -v_buffer 10000 -v_quality 100 -v_preproc 1

It started producing some errors (as you may see from the screenshot below), but that didn't stop WMCmd from finishing its business! Finally, it produced some very nice quality results. I have not completed the process, but it's quite slow and my guess is the output file will be very large.

Would anyone have any idea how to avoid the errors and tweak the parameters to end up with good quality with a smaller file size?

Hi Moz,

You posted 2 methods on the WMEA blog:

First is more complex, WinDVD8, EVODemux, GraphEdit, Avisynth2.57 and WMEA is needed.
1. Demux EVO to mpv & mpa
2. Using GraphEdit make two filter graphs, write 2 Avisynth script.
3. Make sure WMP can play your 2 avs files, then load separate video & audio avs to WMEA, start encoding job.

Second is easier, WinDVD8, EVODemux, Elecard MPEG-2 Decode Pack 3.0, AC3filter1.11 and WMEA is needed.
1. Demux EVO to mpv & mpa
2. Make sure your mpv &amp; mpa can be played by WMP correctly, then load mpv & mpa to WMEA, start encoding job.

However, neither of them work at present!:confused: ... at least, not under Vista!

In the first case, there is an issue with WMEA accepting seperate video and audio AVS and WMEA ends up "Not Responding".

In the second case, (where I don't see why you would need WinDVD8) only the audio is converted. The video is totally neglected! I also tried playing back a VC-1 file in WMP 11 after having installed the Elecard MPEG-2 Video Decoder, but it doesn't play! I even tried the Elecard AVC plug-in for WMP, but that didn't work either!:eek:

I used the following script:

I don't know about the errors, but v_mode 2 is constant quality one-pass, so the bitrate parameter would be ignored -- the v_quality is used instead, and since you have that set as 100, the file will be huge (but nice looking!). For HD CQ, I use quality of 95 or 96. You only use the bitrate parameter if you are doing cbr or vbr (v_modes 0, 3, and 4).

5.7 is the version of Windows Script Host. :)

Buzzqw has WMF SDK 9.5 (WMP10) installed, while you are probably running Vista. That's where the codec difference comes from.

Wmcmd.vbs is version-agnostic as far as WMA Standard and Pro are concerned. It'll use whatever is on the system.

I haven't tested it myself... So if you decide to try it, proceed cautiously.
I tried this today and I can confirm that it works. Once again - I want to stress that this is completely unsupported by Microsoft - but if you really need to get v11 codecs on a Server 2003 system, here's how you can do it:

1. Install Service Pack 2 for Server 2003. If that's not an option, change the registry value HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion from 100 to 200, then follow the remaining instructions, and after install change back to 100.

2. Copy wmfdist11.exe to a local drive. You can extract it from a WMP installer (wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe) with WinZip/WinRAR, get it from the full WM Format 11 SDK, or just search the Internet for a download location.

3. Right click on wmfdist11.exe, pull up its properties. Under the “Compatibility” tab, select “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and set it to “Windows XP”.

4. Run wmfdist11.exe. WM Format 11 runtime installs.

5. Change "CSDVersion" back to 100 if you changed it in the first step.

That's all. If you want WMP too, follow the same steps for wmp11.exe, though it's not necessary to install the player if you just want the codecs.

OK guys, for a noob here. :-)
I got an avi file encoded from a vc-1 using VirtualDub and want to mux it (combine it) with a wma audio from the same movie.
I thought it was a matter of loading both in this app but somehow I started to get two separte files istead of a combined one.

Any help appreciated. :-)

BTW, I tried the media editor and it told me it can only do one type of file.... :confused:

Use the lowest "tree level" possible for each file. Keep clicking + untill you get to each audio or video that you want from each file and only click the last available box.

I would like to second the "Add to Job Queue" request. I don't mind if the job queue is a seperate window accessed through a menu funtion as long as the functionality is there. If you have time, of course.

Does the file play in graphedit? If so, attach graphedit to wmvmuxer while displaying the error message. You should see the conversion graph that is used to reencode.

The file does play in graphedit... How do I attach it to the wmvmuxer? There are no options to do that and all file filters are set to video file extensions...

I believe the video is fed upside down into the encoder by the avs script. I had never such effects with the wmv codec. Anyway, the next version can use avs scripts directly.

P.S. The time limit is a soft limit in the preview version 1. The next update will come in time.

@crypto: Just to let you know: WMV Muxer is not working for me anymore! It only worked once, but rendered the video upside down. I can play my Video_Only.avs and Video_Only.avi file without any problems in WMP. When I try converting Video_Only.avi using Profile [WVC1] 1080p24vbr Q90.prx, I get a "Conversion aborted" error
Failed to convert file, (hresult=0x80004005)
Cause:Unspecified error

I think that's a bug in ffdshow. Are you using the tryouts builds?

ffdshow rev.1133 beta (20070504) is what I was using when I got the upside down video. I then tried ffdshow rev.610 stable (20061201) but I can't get WMV Muxer to work anymore: I keep getting a "Conversion aborted" error (as mentioned above).

Any ideas?

The conversion error occurs when the playback graph and the encoder dmo cannot agree a connection. Unfortunately I cannot get the exact cause from the dmo, why the connection is refused. It basicly means that the media type do not match with the selected profile.

For video it can be a mismatch in resolution, color space, bit depth or other parameters.

For audio it can be a mismatch in the sample rate, bit depth, number of audio channels or other parameters.

Check, if you have made any changes to ffdshow output parameters. How does your avs script look like?

Run graphedit and select "Connect to remote graph" from the file menu.

Ok...I'm back trying to figure out this issue...

I opened GraphEdit and then WMVMuxer.

When I connect remote graph I see one filter: WM ASF Writer with 2 inputs, Audio Input 01 and Video Input 01.

I then loaded the video file (avi) and the filter remains unchanged. I then added the audio file, and no change with the Filter.

I next select the profile (WMV3 1080p 24vbr Q90.prx). BUt the Filter now only has Video Input 01.

I press convert and I get the same error (0x80040154) Cause: Class not registered.

When I go back and attempt the same on any other input files...same behavior...once I select the profile, the WM ASF writer loses its audio input and the same class reg error.

That's an expected behaviour, because WMV3 1080p 24vbr Q90.prx is a video-only profile.

Try to encode the video and audio seperately or use a video/audio profile.

BTW. I have changed that in the new version to 2 seperate profiles for video and audio.

I added my prx files which are both audio and video and it had the same behavior. Can I get version 2 for testing?

Also, do you have a status on AVS support? Will that be part of version 2?

The new version is nearly ready to be released. It supports avs-scripts as input now. Doing so, I lost the media lib support to detect the input media characteristics and had to rewrite that part.

"VC-1 advanced profile, 12 MBit/s constant bitrate, compliant for HD-DVD authoring"

This profile isn't HD-DVD compliant at all. The framerate should be 23.976, not 23.97. The buffer should not exceed 14745 kbits (1.22 seconds in this case). The GOP should not exceed 14 frames if less than 2 B-frames are used (0.584 sec).

Thanks for the info. It wasn't easy to get the parameters. PAL files encoded with that profile are accepted in Sonic's authoring program. I know, that isn't a guarantee, but that program is picky.

Regarding the framerate, the encoder is reconfigured after loading the profile, to adopt the framerate and resolution from the input material.

With the exception of the framerate, the other constraints should be met, if I interpret the XML profiles right.

Framerate: avgtimeperframe="417188" (1e-7 s/f) -> should be 417084 then
Buffer: bufferwindow="1000" (ms)
GOP: maxkeyframespacing="5000000" (1e-7 s)

Anyway, most parts of the encoder/profile standard weren't made with HD-DVD in mind. The framerate granularity isn't fine enough and the encoder cannot embed frame-repeat flags for the 2-3 pull-down. So it is constrained to PAL-only for now, without post processing.

WMVMuxer can only output ASF. To get the ES, Steve's ASF2VC1.exe should be used. Unfortunately he didn't finish the ES-Writer DS-filter, which I intended to use for direct ES output.

This is gonna sound like a newbie question - Ive been messing around with DVDs for years but am new to HD DVD.

Im demuxing my HD DVD (Batman Begins) with EVODemux. I demuxing into a VC-1 and DTS stream. I'm attempting to use WMVMuxer to create a WMV file I can stream out to my 360. The first thing that's happening is the app is seeing my VC-1 stream as an audio file....after messing around with it, I can get the video encoded but am missing the audio...Ive tried different audio formats (wma,ac3,etc) without success...

Ive read all the stickys and ran thru the tutorial using EVOdemux,GraphEdit, and the AVS files but Vista's wonderful DEP forces cscript to crash, even turning it off doesnt help.

Can I demux my audio into a different format like MPV and MPA?

Hi, its best to reencode video and audio seperately and mux audio and video afterwards into wmv. You need to reencode the DTS to WMA Pro to use it in wmv. Load the DTS file as audio into WMVMuxer and make sure ac3filter is installed, which is needed to decode DTS.

When I load "E:\hd rips\PEVOB_1_MERGED.DD+.stream.00.dts" into WMVMuxer and try to encode, it aborts saying something about selecting a video profile will cause the app to crash. I'm not selecting a video profile.

Also, my VC-1 file is being detected as an audio file... :)

Any help?

Are you sure that the audio is DTS? It looks like Dolby Digital Plus. You need a Decoder for that. I think currently the Sonic 4.2 audio filter is the only one available.

Hi ACrowley, to directstreamcopy load the wma file as audio. WMVMuxer defaults to Direct Stream Copy in that case. Then press Multiplex to initiate the process.

Regarding the language, it is hard coded in the profiles to [English USA]. You can change it using WME9's profile editor. The profile used during direct stream copy is
[WMA3] 5.1 48vbr Q90.prx or [WMA2] 2.0 48vbr Q90.prx depending on the number of channels.

I'm trying to mux "video only" WMV9 in .WMV streams together with "audio only" WMA in .WMA streams (using "Direct Stream Copy" mode) but for some reason it does not seem to be working correctly... With some muxing attempts I get the following message: -

Encoding...
Got event: 3
Conversion aborted, (hresult = 0x8000ffff)
Cause: Catastrophic failure

With others, WMV Muxer/Encoder stops working with one frame to go!

Anyway, for my latest testing purposes I've been using the 1080p version of Stormchasers (IMAX), which is available from Microsoft's WMV HD Content Showcase (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx) web site.

When I load the entire file into WMVmuxer (Final), both the video and audio streams are identified. However, when I press "Multiplex" I either see the following message: -

....or, the newly muxed files runtime ends up being approx six times longer than the source :eek:

Plus, although I'm able to de-mux the video stream, I am unable to de-mux the audio stream.

Meanwhile I got that Stormchasers clip. I have the same effects. WMVMuxer does not work well on that clip.

The playtime of files that have been multiplexed with wmvmuxer often display wrong, even with files that multiplex ok. It seems to be a display only problem. WMSnoop displays the correct playtime and the calculated time is also ok (frames / fps).

When the source is already in wmv format, I recommend to use the WME9 Windows Media Stream Editor for multiplexing and demultiplexing. Reencoding to VC-1/WMV however should be fine with WMVMuxer .

I've been using WMVMuxer for a while happily. Fairly normal AVI to WMV conversion. I upgraded my machine last week and decided to format and reinstall OS etc. My WMVMuxer is now crashing with Microsoft report pointing to DIVXDEC.AX. - I am using version 6.5.1.
I cannot convert any AVIs right because of this - it crashes as soon as I press the encode button - any idea?

I can reproduce that here. Run the DivX Playback Configuration tool and uncheck Support decoding of Generic MPEG-4 video. After that encoding works fine.

Hi there, I've just updated PS3 to version 2.10 which supports VC1 in WMV. I'm trying to mux an HD-DVD VC1 stream into WMV without re-encoding, I'm not sure how to do this in WMV Muxer/Encoder. IS there a profile that will not re-encode? The option Mux to Video is not coming up for me.
WMVMuxer does not work on this. No idea why. For a possible way to accomplish this see the Mux VC1 on WMV (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=119785) thread.

No, WMVMuxer cannot add a second audio track. But you can use it to set the language of an audio track. The language is set in the profile. Both audio tracks need to have a different language tag. Then use stream editor to multiplex.

WMXMuxer does not work with any container with a vc1 stream in it. It would be great if it did, cuz I currently have to do 8 extra steps to get from

vc1 bluray> ps3 compliant wmv file. I wish I could code.

This isn't true. I've taken a backup of my Diary of the Dead BluRay, which has video in VC-1.

wmvmuxer has converted the file, which I had in .mkv to 720p for me beautifully. The image looks fantastic, and with only 1 pass.

Where I'm running into issues is getting the audio back. It seems like I need to convert the AC3 5.1 audio I have to WMA before muxing? Is that correct?

Thank you so much for this great tool. I have some DVDs that I'm going to feed to WMVMuxer (as the encoder and muxer) using Avisynth. Knowing that Avisynth can't pass pixel aspect ratio to the encoder, and wishing to avoid resizing in Avisynth, is there any way I can use non-square pixels (e.g., NTSC 4:3 or 16:9) in WMVMuxer's output? My tests so far have shown that the output will be 720x480 at 1:1 even when "allow non-square pixels" is checked in the profile editor. The WME9 interface presents a "Video Size" tab where pixel aspect ratio can be forced to a particular size - is there anything analogous I can do here? Thanks for your help.

I have ripped a blu-ray and demuxed a M2TS file to a seperate VC1 file (1920x1080p, advanced) file and a AC3 (5.1) audio file. I also have converted the AC3 file to a WMA (WMA9 Pro 5.1) audio file. Yet when I try to mux the video file with either the AC3 file OR the WMA file. It crashes.

Can I not do this?

P.S. I don't want to change any of the aspects of the VC-1 video file. I want to leave "As-Is". If I use the WMA audio file, I want to leave "As-is" as well. Although If I use the AC3 file. I will want to have it converted as well.

My end result is a HD VC-1 video file with 5.1 audio that I can play on my XBox 360

You must change the working directory to the "Filters" folder of WMVMuxer; while cmd.exe is focused on the system32 directory, regsvr32 assumes the file "HDTVdump.ax" is in the same folder.

You could try avs2avi to get your h.264 in an avi-file, and try to demux and remux that in graphedit, or try a vfw version of x264, and try to mux that.

Maybe it's not necessary for the Solveig Muxer. It has a checkbox for H264. Just try.

Some years ago I tried what you are doing now, and then changed to MP4, which makes streaming a lot more straight forward. Just had a quick look at my test ASF-files from that time. They play fine in VLC, but not in MPC or WMP. At the time I tried a few options, one of them was VLC, that can do a remux. The test file that plays in VLC is probably done with VLC.

Out of curiosity I just tried an avi to ASF remux with the Solveig Muxer. It plays but shows video corruption.

h264 in avi comes with some pecularities. Use search. But anyways, I tried the avi route, and it didn't work that well. What do you want to do with your muxed files?

I have a media player (two of them actually, one is part of the TV) that does not seem to like wma3 audio in a wmv file (I think you guys call that the container). The video plays fine, but I get an "audio codec unsupported" message on screen.

So I was thinking that I could use this tool to convert the audio stream. I am getting this error:

Could not set audio profile, (hresult = 0x80070003)
Cause: The system cannot find the path specified.
Encoding...
Got event: 3
Conversion aborted, (hresult = 0x8000ffff)

I thought I had seen a similar error in this thread before, but now I can not find it. Do I have to demux the audio from the video first, so that I have two seperate files, and then reencode the audio and multiplex?

And wmvmux just says event 14 and quits...

Just retried Solvieg and had some succes without audio (some corruption on seeking, but for the rest functional video's), but not with audio. I've no idea for a solution.

I know this is an Older post ... but can anyone, including the Author of this program - CRYPTO (if he is still around), help me with this problem ... every time I try to run the program on my laptop which has Vista Home PRemium, SP2, 64-Bit ... I get the following Error ...

"Cannot continue. This program requires HDTV Dump Filter Version 1.2 or later. Please check, if the filter is installed and registered."

BTW, I have already seen the Earlier Post saying to Register the Filter ... and that does NOT help.

Also, I have scoured the interent and there is NO "HDTV Dump Filter Version 1.2" ... the latest version I can find is 1.1 and that does Not work.

The reason I am after this program ... is because I am looking for a Program that it will simply REMux my existing WMV file ... I do Not want to Reencode ...

my WMV video file plays Fine on my "Netgear EVA9100 TV Media Player" (it is a media player like WDTV Media Player) but I can NOT Fast Forward (FF) the file ... every time I try FF the video file ... it goes back to the Beginning of the darn file.

Can anyone provide any Help!

does transcoding/muxing job until last frame, but then "hangs" and can't finish the file. I tried that with several different input files. Same result. Input conforms to ASF specs, I tested with ASFvalidator. It's a pitty, because the GUI looks clean and promising. Here are the A/V properties: ...any ideas what's going wrong ?

After so many "catastrophic failures" :rolleyes: , I had to stop using Crypto's WMV Muxer :( In most cases, SolveigMM ASF Muxer and/or AsfBin are suffficient, but sometimes, ffmpeg :devil: or/and vidtoasf are required too.

I got a "catastrophic failures", aborted, retried (without touching settings), again, "catastrophic failure", aborted, retried (without touching settings) and this time I didn't get an error (talk about consistency ... :-) ). But although no error is issued, the program still "hangs" on the last frame and doesn't finish.

SolveigMM ASF Muxer and/or AsfBin are suffficient
I need to mux audio track (wma) and video track (wmv), I didn't find a way in AsfBin GUI to do that. Is it possible in GUI? Or only in cmd ln? or not at all?

As for SoveigMM ASF muxer, I don't know how to use it. I have registered SMM_ASFMuxer.ax but what now? There is no executable.

I also tried vidtoasf (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/vidtoasf), but it doesn't accept wmv as input (pretty weird for a wmv muxer):

vidtoasf -in video.wmv -audiofile audio.wma -out out.asf
Error: Invalid input file extension.

I only found WmvStreamEditor (http://wmvdemuxer.codeplex.com/) but it crashes upon startup.

the only tool so far which muxed wma/wmv for me is WM Encoder (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Windows_Media_Encoder)
With all the alternatives mentioned here it's a pity that only M$ works :(

aaaah ... this is tricky.
I wanted to join the WM Encoder output (wmv file) with another wmv file with same codec properties (sampling rate, bitrate, channels, etc.) but ASFbin GUI says "compatibility error: audio block aligns are different". Any idea what the reason for this is and how to fix that?

no, but when the source file happens to be in that format, you don't have much choice.
Or is there any other container designed to handle wmv/wma?

That also implies re-encoding, which you seem to want to avoid.

There's an unfinished concatenate filter, but I don't know if it would work with your streams. I'd re-encode to some nicer format at the point of needing to cat files together.

Aaaaahhhh... sadly, sometimes AsfBin "is not perfect" :( , that's very true. In such cases, the first step should be remux thru ffmpeg, and then, try AsfBin --- because often, the ASF files generated by ffmpeg are not *friendly to Windows Media Player* :mad:

As for vidtoasf, apologies :o because I forgot to mention that its goal is remux *from AVI to ASF*
WHEN vidtoasf happens to work :D , the resulting ASF file is properly indexed ( especially when that stupid program states otherwise :p ) --- different from the SolveigMM Multiplexer, which frequently does not :mad: output an indexed ASF file.

4) finally, convert WMV#3 to WMV#4 via AsfBin

But just so that the postings trying to help don't remain without answer here, I will still quickly reply:

re 1): I converted wmv -> mkv with ffmpeg -i clip1.asf -vcodec copy -acodec clip1.mkv that should do the same job (and is easier), right?
re 2): joining in MKVtoolnix worked, but VLC crashes at the joining point. MPC-HC plays fine until joining point, but henceforth plays garbage
re 3): I don't need the final file to be in asf. Quite to the contrary, if it can stay in mkv it's even better. (Besides converting mkv to wmv via ffmpeg fails with "[asf @ 00B58020] Application provided invalid, non monotonically increasing dts to muxer in stream 1: 10803 >= 10803"

That also implies re-encoding, which you seem to want to avoid.

Wrong :) ffmpeg's mkv muxer is un-reliable — sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I will download and study your sample files, they shall be fun :D

ok, I see. Since ffplay has a -concat param (http://ffmpeg.org/ffplay.html#SEC53) I had thought ffmpeg might have one too.

The free Expression Encoder 4 SP1 will take multiple WMV files with the same encoding parameters and concatenate the video tracks, with trimming even. You just need to make sure that they are Closed GOP if you're using B-frames, for the usual reason.

If you've got an old Windows Media Encoder 9 Series installer lying around, the included "Windows Media File Editor" and "Windows Media Stream Editor" can do effective basic file concatenation/editing and stream addition/removal respectively.

A WMV file that doesn't support random access is typically because the file wasn't indexed after creation, which any of the listed tools would fix.
