how to convert XVID VBR MP3 to XVID CBR MP3

Okay so I have been searching for a guide on how to do this, but I haven't been able to find anything reliable or up to date.

Basically I'm looking for a a step by step approach on how to do this as easily as possible.

I have some xvid files that were encoded with VBR MP3. When I straight convert them to DVD, the audio gets out of sync and I've read that its because of the VBR.

Can someone please give me a detailed response on how to do this. Thank you very much and I am sure that this guide will be able to help others aswell.

Download Lame from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/LAME_ACM_Codec_download.htm

Extract them to a folder, right click on LameACM.inf, and choose install.

Do you have virtualdub (http://www.virtualdub.org/)? If not, you should download it and extract it somewhere.

Open virtualdub, open your video (drag & drop or menu). In the video menu, switch it to Direct Stream Copy. In the audio menu, switch it to full processing, and then choose compression. Lame should show up in the left-hand list; choose your CBR bitrate on the right however you like.

You might want to look in the file information (file menu) so that you make sure to choose the right frequency, 44.1 or 48; you don't want to accidentally resample.

okay i did all that. then i just do save AVI? i get an error message stating: error initialzing audio stream decompression: this conversion is not possible. check to make sure you have the irght codec.

I don't know why it is saying that since I know I have XVID codec downloaded.

Any thoughts?

Xvid wouldn't be used for the audio, you should have a mp3 decoder installed with windows. You're sure it's definitely mp3, and not ac3? (mp3 is 0x0055 in the info window, ac3 is 0x2000.) You can always post the first meg or so of the video to get confirmation.

It might also give you that message if you're converting the sample rate, but I'm not sure.

Hi!

1) I looked at the enlarged version of your GSpot screen capture and, squint as I may, I don't see anything stating that the audio is VBR or CBR, but

2) Of course, since you created the XviD-compressed .AVI og an HDTV episode of "The Office", you know which audio codec you used. I'm guessing that you should be able to change the audio format by using that very same audio codecfrom within VirtualDub or VirtualDub MOD.

3) Why did you create the .AVI with .MP3 (VBR or CBR), if you wanted to create a DVD from it?

...i got this rip from a friends tivo. he converted it and this is the format i received it in. what is your fix to my problem?

mp3-->mp3-->AC3 is a bad idea.
If you are just converting to CBR so you can then convert to DVD. Then consider decoding to PCM. Better would be to use the original AC3 from your HDTV cap.

yeah i know but i do not have the original cap.. i don't see why this is giving me a codec error is the problem. it is def. VBR audio and i just need that to be CBR audio mixed with the video since it is going out of sync.

also i tried converting just to PCM and it gave me the same error. I feel like this is something weird with a codec?

you could use MP3packer (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=40780) to losslessly convert your VBR mp3s to CBR ones.

okay sweet so here is the "workaround" if you will to get the problem done. what am i doing is this.

i open up the xvid VBR MP3 in AVIMUX_GUI and extract the binary of the audio track, which leaves about a 20mb VBR MP3 FIle. then using WINMP3 packer i convert that mp3 file into a CBR file.

Now for the video I open it up in VDMOD say no to packet header. I change the video to "direct stream copy" go into "stream list" and disable the track and save the file without audio.

Then I go back into VDMOD, open up the AVI that has no audio, change the video to "direct stream copy" go into "stream list" add the CBR MP3, and save.

Is that exactly how some of you would do it?

I'd leave it myself, but you could avoid a step by disabling one audio stream and adding the other in one go.

okay great thanks for the tips. so when using nerovision to transcode the CBR MP3 XVID it still produces out of sync video.

What would be the best way to transfer the files to a "dvd" source so that I would just be able to add them into a dvd making program instead of having the program try and transcode them. What software and settings would I need to maintain the aspect ratio.

I didn't want to say anything because everyone was being so helpful but this has led far enough, I think. If ajcool actually got this file from a friend's TiVo he should better ask his friend to use MPEG-2, next time. If on the other hand ajcool has downloaded the file from the net, as its naming-scheme suggests, and now wants to make a DVD from it he should turn to a board where help on pirated material is not explicitly forbidden. Thread closed due to possible rule #6 violation.
