Can I get MPC's splitter to work in WMP11

Is there a way to get WMP to use the MPC media splitter by default (specifficaly for avi files if possible)? I like to use WMP for most files, but some are not handles well with the regular splitter. All these files play perfectly in MPC, but I would like to be able to play them all in one player.

Of course. Just browse to celtic driud's MPC site (http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/Media%20Player%20Classic/external%20filters/unicode/) and pick up avisplitter. Use your favorite filter manager to unregister AVI Splitter (don't unregister all of quartz.dll though! That's directshow), and register the new one in its place.

If your favorite filter manager doesn't let you unregister the splitter without killing directshow (reregister quartz.dll to get it back), just find and delete references to {1B544C20-FD0B-11CE-8C63-00AA0044B51E} in the registry.

Actually, come to think of it, unregistering is probably a bad idea; just set the merit lower. >.>

I think registering gabest's avi splitter is enough to make it the default splitter for avi files. Grab it from celtic druid's site like foxyshadis said and register it. However, you will encounter files that will not work properly with gabest's avi splitter but work with Microsoft's one, so it's not an universal option.

Strange that I never had any problems until I re-formated my HD and did a fresh install of XP. Now I am going nuts with these codecs. Every time I install a new codec of splitter it makes some new files work correctly, while others that worked before stop working.

Is there a way to assign codecs to use on a per-file basis, or better yet, is there a way to track what filters are working or not? I was able to play everything with only a few codecs before. I don't want a huge codec pack installed if its not necesarry.

EDIT - Celtic Druids site gives me an error saying the site is forbidden to IE7. Is there a workaround? If
not, can someone post a link to somewhere I can find it?

You should be able to play most files with a small set of filters. You probably have too many installed already. Programs like Nero install a whole bunch of filters that you don't really want/need.

MPC + Haali Media Splitter + ffdshow should play the majority of files. There are good small codec packs like KLCP Standard or CCCP that install just these bare essentials.
