Don't know if this is against the rulez, but I saw an excellent conversion from stereo to surround on Usenet from Pink Floyd's album "Meddle".
One of the best conversions I ever heard !!
It's really incredible what kind of results you can get by the latest software. IMHO this is worth a commercial release.

Any upconvert from a stereo source will simply be using dolby prologic or a similar process to fake it. You can get exactly the same output by running such a filter in real time (ffdshow includes prologic I/II) on the original stereo mix and save yourself a lot of storage space.

Oh damm, then all my Ambisonic knowledge and Steves VI method are just DPL. And here we thought we were doing something different. Thanks for pointing this out.

I guess this was Check's first message in the audio encoding section ?
If not, I suggest you start reading about converting stereo to surround......

Wow. I've heard some pretty good stuff, personally. Some of which was almost discrete.

I downloaded the DVDA version and was really surprised about the quality.
Which version of the three mixes did you like the most ?
As I heard it, QSXT and SMaCS had some slight artefacts, but they were not bothering me. The 225WAD version sounded the most natural but had less separation than the other two.
I cannot make my mind up which one I prefer ;)
