With AVC/H.264 there are a myriad of variables when encoding a video source, but not all devices are capable of playback. Between video-based MP3 players (i.e. PSP/Zune/iPod) and now some cool CE devices that have MP4 playback support, it is tough to make sure content is encoded with the correct options.
Is there a general consensus of what the highest quality options that supports the most number of devices? I'm looking for the right profile/options for converting a DVD mainly for playback on a big screen that is high quality enough to play through my TV, but playable on one of the three big portal media players. I don't watch movies that often on the road, but I'd like to just copy over a movie from my media center to watch.
