no video after format

I'm having such a huge problem.. I've been using divx and xvid codecs for years and never had a problem I couldn't fix.. until now.

I had to format my hard drive and after the format when I try to reinstall the codecs I have no video, the audio works great. I can't get video in VLC Player, WMP 11, BS Player, etc.. I have uninstalled and reinstalled about everything on my hard drive to fix this. At one point I had video but no audio. Now its back to audio with no video (purplish/black screen).

I saw in GSpot that the video path had NERO in it, so I uninstalled Nero but its still not working. I see now that in the video path before the codecs is AVI Splitter, could this be the problem? if so, how do I delete it?

The only codec I have installed at present is K-Lite, which I have on all my other machines and have always used in the past with no problems. I'm also running WnXP SP2.

If you don't have video in VLC, you may have an issue with your video driver. VLC contains its own decoders and should play any video regardless of anything installed on your machine.

Do yourself a huge favor and dump the K-Lite codec pack in favor of the Gordian Knot codec pack available on the main Doom9.org downloads page.

or skip codec packs all together and just install ffdshow and enable filters as you need them.

ffdshow and Ac3Filter combined with CoreAVC provides for a quite easy viewing experience

Would a bad video driver cause the blue screen of death? I got a 0x0000007a KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR blue screen. The reason I had to finally format is, my laptop would start, go to a blue screen and quickly reboot before I could even read the blue screen. So I formatted and now am having this problem..

However, earlier while messing around with the codecs I did see the video without the audio, then when trying to get the audio to work it went back to the way it was, no video with audio. So if the video driver was bad would it sometimes work?

How can I test to see if my video stuff is bad?

I was just thinking.. I wonder if this could be the problem...

This is a laptop. A while back the screen went out, I thought it was the backlight inverter because I can hold a flashlight to the screen and see the desktop. I brought in a monitor and hooked it up and it worked and I havent taken the laptop to have the screen fixed yet. When I formatted the monitor was connected to the laptop. There is only one display device in the device manager... I dont know where video hardware even is... but I know its Radeon IGP 340m.

By the way, I am able to watch video's with sound on youtube.com. So does that help narrow down the problem?

Any suggestions are appreciated.. I've ran out of things to do..

Did you install or reinstall the video driver? You should be able to get it from the site of the manufacturer of the laptop. In most cases you just go to their support or downloads, enter or choose the model number and select it for download.

I did uninstall and reinstall. I downloaded a piece of software from ATI with drivers, etc in it, but it said "INF Error, No VIdeo Driver Found".

I disconnected the monitor and shined a light on my laptop screen and played a video with VLC player and it was working, video and audio. So my question now is, is a video driver inside the monitor iteslf or the tower? I know nothing about hardware. So I guess this means my monitor is bad? I have another one to try out, so I might switch them. I also plan to make an appointment to get my laptop screen fixed but they dont come back till Jan 2nd. THANKS

I tried another monitor, it didnt work. The video WILL work on my laptop screen but not with an external monitor, even though it did a few days ago. Does this mean that the 'video out' or something is bad? I really dont know anything about hardware.... Thanks

What is the brand and model of your laptop? It's possible that the built-in display needs to be disabled. You can try that in the software by right-clicking the desktop (not on an icon) and selecting Properties, then cick the Settings tab. You should see the two displays, and I believe ATI drivers will allow you to turn one off and use the other as the primary display. If that doesn't work, you may need to disable the laptop's display in BIOS.

I have a compaq 2100. Under settings/display both are the same. They both say:

"(Multiple Monitors) on RADEON IGP 340M"

Can you please tell me how to disable it in BIOS.

Look under the main Settings tab. Each display has the ability to be disabled with a power button on the icon.

I can't find the manual with just "2100." There's more to the model number than that.

but I FIXED IT!! =) I was looking up on google how to disable the display in BIOS and found an article about video acceleration. I went into windows media player and changed the video acceleration from full to none. Video came right on. :) WMP is the only video player that I can see video in. Not even VLC. Wonder why that is??

that means your video card is hardcore not working. You should be using video excel on all things.

no, it means overlay mixer doesn't work on an external monitor in all situations. Better solution:
Use VMR7 instead of overlay mixer in all media players. In WMP, this option is called "HQ video" or something and is hidden away. In most other media players just change the output format/renderer from overlay to VMR7

What settings would I use for Windows Media Classic Player?

Err, you mean Media Player Classic (which is not part of windows), or Windows media player? In MPC, the option is under output format in the options. In WMP, I described above.
