CloneDVD to rip instead of AnyDVD. Why?

I use AnyDVD to rip my DVDs to my harddrive and this is the first time I've seen Slysoft recommend that you don't use AnyDVD to rip. Is this a marketing ploy to get users to buy CloneDVD or are there other legitimate reasons. I find the above statement a little troublesome.

I am not entirely sure, but the story behind AnyDVD Ripper is that AnyDVD basically co-opted what is now an old version (1.3.0) of the freeware FixVTS (www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS) and rebadged it to AnyDVD Ripper. They maintained it didn't need updating since the AnyDVD driver was good enough to rip.

I am not sure why they did not update this "AnyDVD Ripper" since FixVTS is now at version 1.6.0.2 - perhaps they no longer have permission.

So, now they wish for you to buy something else. All this on the back of a price rise and the fiasco about them cancelling valid user keys.

Seems strange.

Since the AnyDVD Ripper is starting to show its age, CloneDVD can do the job instead. Aswell as do some manipulations to the DVD. I think the answer is best summed up in this post (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?p=1621788#post1621788).

Even back then, Slysoft was telling its customers to use one of its own products. It's only good business sense right? You wouldn't go tell them to use a competing product or something free would you?

And the cancelling of the keys, as I said in previous posts was done because the 'legitimate' key was found in the wild. How it got there can be your guess ;).

EDIT: @rkr1958. AnyDVD does all the decrypting. CloneDVD just copies the DVD to the hard drive and lets you play around with it before you burn. Just read the post I stated above and you see why they want you to use CloneDVD. To keep it safe, run it through FixVTS (http://download.videohelp.com/FixVTS/) after a rip. That's what I do.

AnyDVD(not AnyDVDripper) can replace cells having BadSectors, but doesn't remove useless cells.
AnyDVDripper can remove useless cells, but is has the problem sometimes. I experienced outputed IFO is incorrect and DVDShrink can't read.
As blutach says, the reason is older FixVTS and impossible to use latest version.
CloneDVD can remove useless cells without problem, so author seems to recommend to use CloneDVD rather than AnyDVDripper.

That's a shame. I like the ease of being able to keep a copy of a DVD on my PC so that I can encode it for whatever device I wish to view it on: pocket PC, PSP, etc. when I want to go a trip. I can do this in other ways but AnyDVD was just a couple of clicks away.

Walt Disney's, "The Fox and the Hound 2" (Region 1)

1. AnyDVD 6.1.0.0 (2006 12 26) Ripper rip to harddrive > Out of Memory Error in DVDShrink.

2. Straight Copy w/AnyDVD to harddrive > Invalid data error in DVDShrink.

3. Straight Copy (#2 above) > FixVTS 1.602 (remove unref & blank cells & fix wrong PGC LBA) > Out of Memory Error in DVDShrink

4. Vobblanker w/AnyDVD to rip to harddrive > No Errors in DVDShrink

5. Vobblanker to rip (#4 above) > FixVTS (remove unref & blank cells & fix wrong PGC LBA) > No Errors in DVDShrink

So neither the AnyDVD (newest version) ripper or copy with FixVTS worked correctly on this title. It also took Vobblanker.

I use CloneDVD to rip all the time, with AnyDVD running in the background. Using CloneDVD I can pick the main movie, the audio tracks I want and the subtitle I want, and leave the rest of the stuff.

Wolf (slysoft ) in sheeps clothing ( elby ) Would probably sum it up . I have used both for a long time , smoothly I might add.
I have only had problems with a couple of new movies , eg tokyo drift , davinci code . I think they are using something like chapter jump . Tried to update any dvd, and was told that key is no longer valid . Boooooooo , luckily a system restore . The updated any dvd says it will fix this , but is it worth paying again , I´m not sure . The magic thing was off topic and was spam .
