View Full Version : AutoGK 2.40, Xvid = AVI too dark

Hi,
I am a 1st time user and very novice in video encoding. I am still learning how to use AutoGK 2.40. I've tried to encode some CSI episodes into 1/2 CD size, using the included Xvid codec.
The resulting AVI is too dark. I have to increase the brightness and contrast of the player (BS Player 2.11 and WMP 10) in order to obtain a similar appearance than the original DVD playback.
Is there any settings in AutoGK that would allow to increase the brightness of the AVI? I've looked in all possible options but I didn't see any such settings. If the darkness is a consequence of an error before the encoding, I would appreciate if you can hint me what I did wrong.
Thanks in advance.

Where does FFDShow come from and what is it used for? Is it included with AutoGK 2.40? I use BS Player 2.11 and WMP 10 for playback.

Hi,

Hi and welcome to the forum,
Did you use the Colorcorrection setting in the hidden options (Ctrl-F9) ?
It is supposed to better manage the colorspace different between comp screen and TV... If not try it with the fast checkbox option.
Or your screen is too dark did you made a calibration?
See the hidden options settings in the tutorial: http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=TutorialEN

Thanks for your help. I'll try your suggestion. For the AVI / DVD playback comparison, I did them on the same computer so the monitor calibration is not a problem.

In my experience such problems are almost always playback related. Try opening the video in VDub and see how it looks.

You are right on both. "Fast" option selected for Colorcorrection has improved slightly the brightness.
But the real cause is that because my monitor was dark as you suggested. When I first played the AVI which was too dark, I set BS Player to increase the brightness by +20%. Then I played the DVD which looked fine, but I failed to notice that BSPlayer maintains the same brightness setting for DVD playback.
Today, I test the newly encoded AVI (using the Fast Colorcorrection) and still have the dark color issue. I then redid a more thorough AVI/DVD playback comparison with several brightness & contrats settings (within BS Player). That is where I realize the mistake I made in the previous comparison.
Thanks again for all your help and sorry for the misleading error.
