Coincidence? New USB Drive and Rip Times have Doubled??!!

I was ripping my first set of movies to an external Seagate 300db USB drive and was seeing rip times of approx. 14-20 mintues (I'm ripping from a celeron 1.4mhz laptop with very average DVD reader).

I ran out of room on my 300gb drive and picked up a 1 terrabyte Maxtor USB external dive today. The first two rips have each been in the 35-40minte range... My DVD drive is reading at an average of 1.7-2.0 speed.

What gives? Is the read rate of the DVD drive extraction dependent on the write speed to my new external drive? If so, is there anyway to explore how I might be able to speed this up?

Hi!

Check to see if your DVD drive's mode has changed from DMA to PIO (which is much slower).

If it has, then do the following to reset it to DMA:

In the Device Manager (via the Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager), you simply have to remove the applicable IDE channel (Click on "IDE...Controllers") and let your computer reset it to DMA as follows:
Right click on the pertinent channel in Device Manager
Click on uninstall
Reboot
After rebooting go back to Device Manager and change the setting to "DMA if available"...

A USB drive has significantly slower transfer speeds because it's only going at 480Mbps. You might want to make sure, though, that you really are transferring at USB2.0 speeds and not USB1.1 (11Mbps).

OOPS! I totally missed the reference toUSB external divealthough that hard drive shouldn't be impacting the burner's read rate

Both drives are external usb. Any other ideas?

Guys, I returned the Maxtor OneTouch Terrabyte USB drive and bought a Seagate external OneTouch USB drive instead. My rip times are back to 12-14 minutes vs the Maxtor's 25 -35 minute burn times.

For what it's worth, I tried the maxtor on several other computers in my house all with the same result. I've learned that your DVD reader will only read as fast as your hard disc is willing to accept the data. THis Maxtor evidently has a very poor USB interface implementation...
