Quick 4:3/16:9 Question!

hey all,

im going to be converting a dvd for xmas and i need some quick advice on which side of the dvd to use. ive got one of those two sided dvds that says 'full screen' on one side and 'widescreen' on the other. i do not have a widescreen tv but i always use 16:9 so that it displays with the black bars on top and bottom.

my only fear is that ill select the wrong one and the picture will be screwed. i have one movie that seems to be like 'double 16:9' with extra thick black bars that are twice the size of normal. i just dont want that to happen to this one.

Here's what I think...

Selecting 16:9 adds black lines to top and bottom. The 4:3 DVD version already has black lines top and bottom so you don't want to add any more. The 16:9 DVD version has no lines on the DVD so you add them using 16:9 option in DVD2SVCD.

I'd use the 4:3 version with DVD2SVCD set to 4:3 also.

I believe he wasn't sure which side is which.
If it says Full screen on the top of the DVD as you put it in....then it's gonna be WIDESCREEN and vice versa. They (studios) think we're idiots so they second guess us and we second guess them and screw up.

hah well actually i wasnt really asking that question. i do hate how they do that though. the first time i saw one of those dvds i of course put in it on the wrong side since i dont follow the same crazy logic as the dvd makers. thats for the responses though....i put it on the widescreen side (with the widescreen disc facing down and the widescreen label facing up! argh! :)) and did a 16:9 rip so i think it will be how i hope.

I also have a 4:3 TV set with a widescreen mode.
I usually rip the "so-said" widescreen version of the movie and select 4:3 in DVD2SVCD.

Works great and hopefully will even be better on mye future widescreen TV set :)
