I was re-encoding my xVid backups to H264, when this happened:

I'm 100% sure that it wasn't in the source. My AviSynth script was just simple, AviSource("filepath") and that was it...

can you confirm the artefacts are not there when you encode to a lossless format? Please post your avisynth script, as well as basic input information (resolution, framerate, etc).

Set your CPU, RAM and VideoCard clocks to defaults and try again.

I can't change their clocks, it's a Pentium M 1.4GHz, 1GB RAM, 64MB IGP...

then, check your decoders (even the VFW one since you're using avisource) and ensure they're up to date.
try playing the file in VLC or some other player that doesnt use DirectShow and see if the problem is still there, coz it could be a decoder issue.

I updated all my decoders yesterday and VLC plays the input fine and with the output the artefact is there...

Overnight I used Sharktooth's build of x264 v614 and the artefact disappeared. Now I wish I could remember where I got the first one from...
Anyway, thanks for all your input.
