I've got a few mkv high definition videos which have 5.1 AC3 sound. I want to convert it to WMV so that I can play them on my xbox360. I've got WinAVI which can convert mkv to WMV, but I loose the 5.1 and only converts to stereo.
Is there another program which can convert to WMV and retain the 5.1 surround sound?
Thanks, any help would be very greatful.

you can use windows media encoder
install haali's media splitter
wmencoder will use it to read the mkv file
then you just set your ac3 decoder to give 5.1 audio and then encode it as such

Or use Super (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html). If you need a guide of Windows Media Encoder, visit zune video converter (http://www.zunevideoconverter.com/zune_converter_guide.html).

I believe you need to demux ac3 into 6 mono wav files, then combine these into multichannel wav using MS wavmuxer (Zambelli posted a link to that utility somewhere in this forum), and feed that into WME. I'm afraid that is the only way to get 5.1 sound in wmv.

no
i always encode my ac3 to wma pro 5.1
i v never had to demux it
just put the ac3 into mkvmerge
get the output
then put it in wmencoder with your ac3 decoder set to 5.1 output
and you will get 5.1 wma
it seems more convenient to me this way

@akby
that's great if it works for you. I was basically quoting Zambelli from this post http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=907510&highlight=multichannel#post907510 maybe your ac3 decoder does output multichannel wav in proper format?
