Uisng DVD2SVCD, do I really gain any advantage in using a 4 pass VBR as Doom's
DVD2SVCD guide suggests?

Or is 3 pass CCE quality vs 4 pass CCE quality about the same?

from what i have found the more passes the better the picture (to a point) so i would say yes, there is a quality advantage in 4pass over 3 (for most movies)

I do it now..but used to do 2 pass and it was acceptable..not all that great...3 pass is great...4 pass is a tad better but hard to tell. Do 4 pass only if you have the time.

Done over 50 movies in 3 and 4 pass VBR .. There is probably more difference in quality due to SOURCE material than between the 3rd and/or 4th pass. Just did the original "Jurassic Park" in 3 pass VBR. Quality of output was EXCELLENT due to the original DVD's high quality source material. I have done OTHER movies in 4 pass VBR that do not look as good as "Jurassic Park" in 3 passes.
IMO - If you want to make a direct comparison between 3 and 4 pass VBR make sure you do the SAME movie ..
