convert avi(wmv codec) to wmv format

I knew that xbox 360 can playback .wmv files.
I have a avi file encoded in wmv codec, the audio part is mp3.
I tried to rename the file extension to .wmv but 360 still can't play it. I guess 360 can't play avi container media files no matter it is encoded in wmv codec.

Is there any way to transform the avi container to .wmv container format ? Like first demux original avi to video and audio stream and then mux back video and audio stream and the output format is .wmv instead

Try the Solveig Multimedia ASF Muxer for DShow. You should be able to remux the WMV9 video to .wmv without recompression.
