I want to backup a DVD-9.
I used DVD Shrink and it compressed the movie to make it fit in one single DVD-R.
I burned the disc and it plays perfectly in WinDVD and PowerDVD, but the quality is not the same as the original disc.
I decided to try splitting the DVD-9 as explained in the DVDFab and IfoEdit guides in the site. So I started with DVD Decrypter to copy the DVD files to my HD. No problem.
Using DVDFab I successfully splitted the movie and I burned the 2 discs.
I played the entire movie in WinDVD and it worked fine.
But when I tryed to use the slidebar to jump to another part of the movie, WinDVD hanged. I tryed with PowerDVD and it also hanged. I tryed using the fast-forward and it worked fine in both WinDVD and PowerDVD.
The problem is that I can't use the slidebar because the player hangs.
In the best case, after waiting several seconds, the audio started playing again, but the picture remains freezed or black.
Using IfoEdit I had the same problem but only in disc 2.
The disc 1 had no problems at all with the slidebar.
Trying to isolate the problem (and to avoid wasting money in blank DVD-R), I decided to create a VIDEO_TS folder in my C drive to test the discs directly from my HD using WinDVD and PowerDVD before burning.
I realized that the problem is still there... so I discard being Nero or ImgTool/DVD Decrypter messing with the files.
Then I played the ripped version of the DVD to try to discard DVD Decrypter. Result: the ripped files were OK and the movie played perfectly without any problems.
The only 2 pieces of software that creates the problem is DVDFab and IfoEdit.
What am I doing wrong?
Notes: when I start playing with DVDFab's options to generate VIDEO_TS and to correct sectors the problem is still there (it seems to vary a little, but in the end I still can't use the slidebar).
When I play with IfoEdit's functions to re-generate IFOs it solves the problem, but everything in the movie gets weird (eg: subtitles in fat-green-impossible-to-read letters).
On the other hand, investigating about this problem, I found out that DVD Shrink can rip in 2 or more parts if I select "start/end frames"... but I've not seen this explained in Doom9 guides. Did I miss the guide or there's a particular reason to avoid using DVD Shrink to split the DVD-9 into 2 DVD-Rs?
With DVD Shrink I had no problems at all and it seems to work pretty fine. Now I feel a little uncomfortable because after investigating all these days and trying to learn about DVD authoring the problem was too way more easy to solve than what I espected and what it seemed in the beginning.
