Resizing vs setting DAR in settings

I read the FAQ about the resizing of DV AVI. I think a similar result can be achieved (at least by my visual perception, which could be wrong) by setting the DAR in the X264 settings box as follows (for NTSC)

8:9 (4:3)
32:27 (16:9)

Please advise.

Yes, it can.

Technically, however, you're changing the PAR, and not the DAR, but the numbers you gave would be the same for the respective aspect ratios. More infomation can be found here:

So I am using VLC only and it can handle PAR - so I think I'm good.
