Disk speed query

I have been burning Maxell 8 speed DVD-R disks on my NEC 2500A for many months with no problem but since I bought some Maxwell 1-16 speed DVD-R my burner comes up with an incorrect disk error. I use Nero to burn
Even though the disks are a maximum 16 speed shouldn't the burner adjust to a lower speed 8 or below or have I got a bigger problem?

It is probable that the dye type of the 16x discs is newer than the drive - ie when the drive was manufactured, discs with this dye were not available. As a result the drive does not know how to write to discs of this type.

It is possible that the drive will recognise the discs after a firmware upgrade. See the download section of NEC's site for the latest firmware for your drive and update instructions.

Be sure to get the correct one, or you could seriously damage your drive.
