View Full Version : Looking for advice re removal of VHS artefacts

Hi,

I'm sure this is nothing new but searching the web and forum.doom9.org I couldn't get any useful results. So if someone could provide me with the right keywords to describe those artefacts (so I can do useful searches) or the name of the AviSynth Method/Function/Procedure I'd be more than happy.

Those red, blue or yellow lines occasionaly appear for one frame only. Please see attachment.

I wonder if DeScratch would work on those frames.

I'll see what I can accomplish with the DeScratch plugin, thanks. That video was shot in Pori '83, btw. Not that far away from Lahti I guess.

I can also see combing remnants indicative of a poor deinterlacing/IVTC'ing.

That's because no filter has been applied yet. I copied that frame out of VirtualDub right after capturing from my VHS source. I don't plan to deinterlace.

Well, try to use cnr with larger change accross frames. Tell me if thet helps, I m not sure how it deals with interlaced video.

I deinterlaced and played around with various cnr settings a little bit. Not perfect but for a first attempt it looks quite acceptable to me. Thanks for your advice! Got to try DeScratch tomorrow, too.

I'd rather use FFT3DFilter or FFT3DGPU for chroma denoising, CNR2 can create some weird artifacts. What comes to processing interlaced material and keeping it interlaced, there are quite a few threads about it.

Dont know, I didnt cleaned some video with strong chroma artifacts using FFT3D, but maybe it can be done with excellent settings.
