How should I backup a dual-sided DVD to a DVD-R with RipIt4Me?

I recently bough "V - The Complete Miniseries" for my eldest brother and want to back it up to DVD-Rs so that he can store the discs and not wear them out. Thing is, the three DVDs are dual-sided. I figure these are the options we have:

- Backup to 3 DVD-Rs

- Backup to 3 DL DVDs

- Backup to 6 DVD-Rs

Which would be more suitable if we want to keep the disc structure intact?

I'm currently doing the same thing with all the Smallville seasons. I've taken the approach of splitting to multiple DVDs while keeping the menu structure intact. It's pretty much turning out to be two episodes on one single layer. SL DVDs are so cheap these days, especially with the scores I've been making on TY and Verbatim, so it's a non-issue.

Although you've stated that the DVDs are double-sided ("flippers"), you haven't said whether each side is single or double layered...

This has nothing to do with decrypting and everything to do with editing and your personal preference as to quality, time, cost. As such, we can not answer you, except to say RipIt4Me will create a single folder for each side of each DVD.

Thread transferred to IFO/VOB Editors, where techniques regarding disk splitting can be explored, if you like.

setarip_old: I'll have to check, but since it's AFAIK an old release I'd wager each side is single-layered.

blutach: thanks for the move, this forum indeed sounds like a better place to have such a question answered. As for the compromises one enters when doing this kind of things, I'm aware of them. That's why I asked for a method that will be on par with RipIt4Me (i.é: DVDShrink) and can be used on dual-sided discs.
You say DVDShrink will create two folders, but I assume video DVDs can't handle two VIDEO_TS folders. Will I have no choice but to backup to 6 discs?

As blutach said. riput4me will just rip each side to the folders.

Now if you backup to 3 DL DVD, you keep exact copies of originals.

if you backup to 3 DVD+/- R, you will need to compress using DVD Shrink or DVD-RB or other tools.

Personally for retaining structure, I'd be inclined to follow chainring's lead and backup to 6 SL discs - straightforward, quick, and reasonably cheap.

Having said that, I had quite a lot of fun (and learning) when I had a go at Joining two DVD's while preserving menu's (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96211) using available free/donation tools. I also tend to backup tv series to XviD, which takes longer but uses less disc's (but that's another story/forum).

I will also backup the whole set to a DL DVD (HT NTSC Profile Xvid, 512x384 video @ 1130kbps with original AC3, most likely :)).

well, i should have clarified I meant in terms of quality and not in terms of navigation. navigation is another aspect of it and can be managed, with either independent or linked playbacks.

:confused: The sides of a dual-sided DVD are always independent. In fact the collection of the 3 DVDs are really 6 totally independent DVDs, packaged together on 3 dual-sided DVDs. Therefore, copying each side on another DVD is the right thing to do.
Choosing to backup them on single or double layer DVDs is another problem, regarding quality only.

I did the same as rOIZ. It's really the only way to go. Make up your labels, and mark them as disc___side___, and you're set to go.

This should be 3 DVD 18's / 3 double sided double layer discs. I will have my copy soon. I won't be backing them up on DL due to the fact it only cost me $10 new. It would cost me more money to do DL's. If I decide to backup. It will be SL with DVD-RB as the quality is not very good to start with.
