Hi folks

I've been keen on watching satellite feeds in 4:2:2

Which codecs exactly are known to be able to decode 4:2:2 in mpeg2-TS?

I'm using elecard, ok, and i've heard that ffdshow can do it too - i still haven't tried it.

Does anyone know of some more?

I've been told that nvidia's purevideo can do it to, but i can't get around to do it myself.

Thanks for any help.

That's pretty rare - AFAIK only studio grade MPEG-2 is 4:2:2 (YUY2)... I can't imagine that satellite transponders would carry it and its correspondingly high bandwidth.

Are you sure it's YUY2 MPEG-2? Or is your MPEG-2 decoder outputting YUY2?

Hi there

I wouldn't exactly know how to answer your question, but it is definetly 4:2:2 mpeg2 being broadcast by satellite transponders :D

It's a well famous thing, these are feeds being relayed from one satellite provider to another, or from a live event. That's the reason why they're encoded using professional formats. A lot of them are unencrypted too - they don't have to worry about that as most users don't have access to 4:2:2 set-top-boxes.

libmpeg2 & ffmpeg supports 4:2:2. That means ffdshow ( which implement both ), and of course all the programs that use libavcodec ( ffmpeg, mencoder, xine, vlc... )

thanks manao. Is dscaler part of that list too?

^ go to www.dscaler.org and ask JohnAd. He's the main programmer.

the question was if dscaler used the same ffmpeg/libmeg2 libraries, really - as it's gnu/gpl...

Hehe, actually, i was talking about the dscaler mpeg2 codec

Isn't media player classic meant to do it too? I doesn't seem to to so on my setup. Plus, i've installed the stand alone mpeg2decfilter.ax but it doesn't seem to play any 4:2:2 content either... is there a specific render (vmr9, overlay, etc) that i should choose?
Tried Dscaler and it works though ;)
