But it's way too expensive.

I betcha the price will come down once Christmas is over.

I'll think about getting it when it comes down to $1000.

correction. Intel core 2 quad is out. that is 2 core 2 duos on the same cpu package. so not real(or native if you prefer) quad core at all. they will come next year.

a bit about core 2 quad for anyone interested.

real or not real, it sure is FAST... I have a Core 2 Duo and is the fastest computer I've had so far... I can encode videos to H.264 in no time... I'm sure the Quad core is lot faster.... :)

Sure it is pretty damn fast,
Especially if you overclocked it, you will love to encode any movie. Mine also run very fast, ripping dvd to divx only waste 50% of its capacity (using Core2Duo E6300) not sure how about Quad Core Extreme. I think will double more fast.

and heres just 1 review. anyone can find more with the tiniest effort.

http://cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=19231

it includes tests with x264, xvid and divx.

also people should understand that the program needs to really be able to use more than 2 cores/threads to actually get the most out of this. some programs dont of course.

finally this thread should really be in the hardware section. infact there is already a discussion thread about quad core and x264 there

Check this thread, the new x264 rev610 performance compared... Core 2 Duo performs better than others by a big margin...

did you bother to go read that review ? especially look at the "advanced video encoding" page. yes it was x264 R602 but it still shows the speed differences, including speeds of both passes of a 2 pass encode.

as i said it also shows xvid 1.1.2 aswell. different story there. which should help people understand the point i already said.
