Slysoft are offering a discount on software keys bought before next Wednesday, and the price of AnyDVD will rise in the new year to $49.

I haven't yet come across a DVD that I couldn't decrypt with freeware, but then again, my video library is quite old.

I'm going to register CloneCD, because I know I'll find it useful. At an additional $15, is it worth me also buying AnyDVD "on the off chance", even though I might never use it?

What are your net assets and liabilities, so that I may answer properly? :)

If you're rich, go for it. If you're dirt poor, don't.

I certainly haven't regretted purchasing AnyDVD. They are always quick to update when a new copy protection is released. AnyDVD is in a different league to other freeware programs since it decrypts "on the fly".

We're talking $15 here. If you can spare it go for it. It has life time updates anyway. For that price it's VERY cheap. My opinion, go for it.

Why bother? RipIt4Me is free and so is DVD Shrink/DVD Rebuilder (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/) (non-Pro).

RipIt4Me isn't the same as AnyDVD as you know. AnyDVD works on the fly (which comes in very handy) while RipIt4Me you have to rip it to your hard drive. If he is willing to spend $15 it would be a great buy. Why not spend $15 when it isn't going to be that cheap any more and still have RipIt4Me. Best of both worlds.

The coupon is only good for 5 dollars off. So the price of ANYDVD is $34.00. The more programs you buy, the more discount you get.

I said I was going to buy CloneCD anyway - that's $39, or $34 with the coupon.

If I buy AnyDVD at the same time, the total comes to $59, or $49 with the discount. $49 minus $34 is $15.

@neuron2:

I'm wealthy enough to buy a terabyte of storage space every few months. I'm silly enough to fill it. On balance, I suppose that makes me fairly impecunious. :)

impecunious \im-pih-KYOO-nee-uhs\, adjective:
Not having money; habitually without money; poor.

Her father, Bronson, was a respected but impecunious New England transcendentalist who had 'no gift for money making', according to [Louisa May] Alcott's journal.'

AnyDVD for me was a worthy investment,i like the frequent updates + the transparency of AnyDVD sitting in the background doing its stuff without me ever worrying about Protection Schemes.
Personally ,money well spent.

Best of both worlds.I don't think that is handy at all.

3 reasons:

1. Without the files on your hard drive, you can not edit your files
2. It's faster when re-encoding and less wear on your optical drive to work from ripped files. Evilclive has also indicated that he has plenty of hard drive space
3. RipIt4Me is more compliant and handles more DVDs - I've seen cases where AnyDVD fails but RipIt4Me does not.

And a 4th reason, to address Gehanna's point. Some people do not mind having non-essential low level drivers running all the time. Others do - I guess, I fit into the latter category.

Take your pick, Evilclive. :)

I agree Ripit4me is the best program I have ever used.

Anyway, each to his own.

It is subjective. And we should take heed of rule 12. :)

I purchased anydvd a year ago, and I am very happy with it. It was money well spent for me.

I purchased AnyDVD around 18-months ago, just after when the MPAA lawyers had strong armed LIGHTNING UK! and shut him down from updating DVD Decrypter). I've been very happy with AnyDVD and have yet to encounter a DVD that it couldn't handle. It's updated frequently and for $15 you get it with a free lifetime of updates.

Also, when the Sony rootkit malware installed by some music cds came to light, I believe I read on the Slysoft website that AnyDVD would protect (i.e., prevent) the installation of such malware. I never personally confirmed this but this may be another factor (if true) which you may wish to consider.

Lastly, for $15 you have two current DVD rippers (AnyDVD & RipIt4me). If the MPAA lawyers were to succeed in shutting down updates to RipIt4me (like they did to DVD Decrypter) you'd still have AnyDVD (for $15 versus whatever the full price for it would be then.)

I have been using AnyDVD in conjunction with CloneDVD for about eighteen months now and there hasn't been a single problem whatsoever. The program is effortless and the best part is there has never been even one hiccup with the resultant DVDs.

At the time I paid full price, but given my experiences at this juncture I would easily pay double or more for it.

I tested AnyDVD with various Region 2 Greek releases...
The results were not always satisfactory...
...but slysoft support responded rather quickly(most of the times) to update their software...
The compatibility with DVD Shrink and Nero Recode is not perfect and this is important to me...

I prefer RipIt4Me for my rips....

P.S. These tests are with Region 2 Greek titles...
If you are not Greek, please don 't question them just because in your country AnyDVD works with every title...

I tried AnyDVD, but found that despite how cool it's behind the scenes decrypting was, I didn't want to pay for it, and ri4m is just as good, even though it takes a bit longer. Honestly though, it's nice to just tell it 'i want this, do it', and have it automate dvd decryptor, fixvts, etc...

I didn't mean don't rip to the hard drive. What I meant was no decrypting program is perfect, with AnyDVD you can check if it will do its job right then and there with no ripping to the hard drive. With RipIt4Me you will have to rip it first and then go through the movie to see if it didn't accidently remove and crucial parts.

I don't see any information to suggest RipIt4Me handles more DVDs than AnyDVD. More over, it does fix a number of Windows bugs concerning drives.

As I said before, both programs are great. I don't think $15 will make much of an impact on evilclive's wallet either ;). Why not have the best of both worlds?

I don't praise programs very often, but AnyDVD is absolutely worth it. I've never come across a DVD it couldn't handle, and with "on the fly" decrypting, I almost forget that copy protection even exists. I also sleep better at night knowing that AnyDVD removes copy protection (and rootkits) from CDs as well. And I'm no Slysoft fanboy. I don't like CloneDVD, and I absolutely loathe CloneDVDMobile. For those two programs, the free alternatives are not only cheaper, but better. But AnyDVD is practically perfect, and is always improving with frequent updates.

Doesn't every backup program rip to the hard drive? Some do it in a temporary folder before an automatic burn. I think that is the point Blutach is making. All backup software must first rip to the hard drive. What AnyDvd does is it decrypts while whatever program is used rips to the hard drive. Some backup programs do the rip and burn automatically but all rip to the hard drive. At least that is the way I understand it.

I read an interesting post in these forums a while back, that indicated one extremely big benefit of using "AnyDVD" that can't be performed by "RipIt4Me' or any other ripper - For on-the-fly conversion from DVD to .AVI (or any other compressed format)

AnyDVD decrypts the DVD in the background as soon as it is inserted into the drive. Read more about it here (http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html). You could either copy/paste all the files over to your hard drive or use a 'ripper'. I use DVD Decrypter with all the copy protection features disabled. I let DVD Decrypter remove the PUOs instead of AnyDVD though.

I've done it a few times when porting my DVDs to my iRiver.
