View Full Version : More Than 2 Encoder Processes?

Hi all.

I mentioned this a long time ago, but I think it may have gotten lost in the clutter. Anyway... the "Multiple Encoder Processes" setting in DVD-RB allows you to run two concurrent encodes at one time. It's meant to get the most out of very fast or multiple core processors. The way it tells itself to do this is by setting the value:

Encode_Processes=2

in the "[Options]" area of REBUILDER.INI. If there are those among you who have multiple processors (X2 or Dual Core) and are not getting 100% processor usage when encoding... you might want to try this trick. Set the value higher, for example:

Encode_Processes=3

I wrote the code to support any number of concurrent processes -- and I'm wondering it setting it higher than 2 will further speed up encoding for some folks. Remember, though, not to click "Multiple Encoder Processes" on/off again. It will set it back to 2...

If anyone gets a chance to test this, I'd be interested in the results. :)

Thanks.

@jdobbs

My experience is that it always uses 100% of the (combined) processors at the 2 setting.

Running DVD-RB 1.20.4 on an Intel core 2 Duo 6600. AutoQMatEnc. Both cores at 100%.

Ok... I guess that's what should be expected, then. But just think how cool it will be when you get your quad processor computer next year! :D

Where I work we have a few of these LINK (http://www.digitalvideoediting.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=83846) and they are great at some thing but no better then an avg Dual-Core CPU at other stuff.....

P.S. DVD-RB run great with CCE Basic and HC

My Athlon X2 4200+ usually shows about 70-75% CPU usage with CCE Basic. Put in the values you stated and still had the same CPU usage on a "Movie and Menu" of Pearl Harbor. 5 min to prepare, 61 min to encode and 13 min to rebuild. Total time 79 min.
I really don't think it made any difference to call for a third encoder because it just isn't available. I am going to go back to the standard setting an see if there is any difference
Completed size was 4.31 Gig

I should have been clearer. CCE does not allow multiple encoder instances -- so the setting won't have an effect. It would only apply to HC, QuEnc, or ProCoder.

I'd love to find a way to make it work with CCE, but right now CCE will refuse to run when you attempt to run a second copy concurrently.

Well, you could try 1 instance of CCE SP 2.70.02.xx and 1 of CCE SP2 1.00.00.xx. The core engine is the same and both yield pretty much the same results quality and speed wise.

Well .. I made a screen shot before I read this NOT inc CCE..

But this is how it seames here..

Wow. An 8x encoding speed is pretty impressive even without multiple encoder instances. I'm envious... :D

Is this an option in the free version?

No. It's only available in the Professional Edition.
