Hi all you Doom9ees,

what do you guys think about HDngn and its juicyPlayer theme? The (ugly) theme will be improoved soon (you can do yourself when you change the "/data/scripts/system.lua"). But what about the real time video improovements. Could you see the effect, and do you like it? We know there are still some problems. But if it works correct - is it an improovement you like? :thanks:

Your HDngn-Team

Interesting player, seems to offer nice image quality. Some keyboard shortcuts to control playback & sound like VLC/Media Player Classic would be nice in future versions.

I have yet to check it out. I just googled it. Will report back.

Help! I'm trapped in 1999 and I can't get back! ... oh, that's just the web site. :p

For some reason it turns all video extremely posturized on my ATI X1400. Otherwise it seems to run pretty well. I'll have to check it out an on nvidia sometime and see if that's why. (nvidia's OGL is much better, after all.)

Only inbuilt decoders? If you want to go down that path, at least include support for mkv, h264, aac, etc. Otherwise, the player is mostly useless for me. The better solution is of course, directshow :)

Keyboard shortcuts will come with a nice and all new Skin.

-space to pause/play
-alt+return for fullscreen
-mouse doubleclick for fullscreen

Some more suggestions for shortcuts? You will even have a volume slider (which is NOT just a controll of the Soundcards sum so you can still hear the other one in Skype :D )

We will try to make it the most comfortable player with some realtime functions. For example one function to correct the sound offset you sometimes find at the end of files. Also a super fast scrollbar is in work.

If you have further suggestions for comfort/usability feel free to send them to juicyPlayer (at) HDngn.c0m [you know what to do about that 0]

NVidia drivers do some less problems right now. But ATI also works. ATI is somehow much more restrictive with their Developer program and doesn't accept our project - write them a mail and hope they will support our development in future.

At the moment we only have decoders from DirectShow. But a codec installed it also can do H264 & Co. Sometimes the filename is not accepted - try renaming it .AVI as a first workaround.

Other decoders are planned in future releases. We will also offer some comfort function to let YOU select which DirectShow filter to use.

Some other Players pretend to have picture interpolation features. You can try how "real" they are with using the classic "clock.avi" running at 1FPS.

ahh yes, renaming to .avi and enabling haali splitter for avi splitting seems to work most of the time as a workaround. On a few files it does not though, an mkv/aac/h264 failed, but another of the same format worked just fine.
When you said "But a codec installed it also can do H264 & Co", do you mean this prorgam has installed and registered a directshow filter?

juicyPlayer

Yes we are currently using DirectShow :goodpost: :goodpost: , but we don't install any filters. Only a framegrabber filter is registered in the DS-Graph at runtime. But other file access (buld in like VLC/ and Qucktime etc.) are planned in future. But the choose will be up to you then...

13th December 2006, 11:38
ahh goodo, dshow == ftw :). btw, if a filter is registered on progrma start, what happens if the program crashes? Otherwise, as long as the only change in the dshow graph generated is the insertion of a frame grabber instead of a video renderer, it looks very promising :D

juicyPlayer
13th December 2006, 13:03
:thanks: The filter added to the DS-Graph only exists as an object at runtime. Is does not register in the DS-Filters database. Sometime DS fails to connect our framegrabber filter - thats when you see the Overlay Fallback Window. We try to fix this in an upcoming version. We are glad to hear
that picture quality improovement is recognised. An all new deinterlacer and music playback come with the next betas. And the new GUI will be really good looking and comfortable to use...

Works ok on ATI 8500, no noticeable visual defect.

There is no general problem with ATI cards. And some NV cards have problems too. Common failure is sometimes a loss of render context/texture loss on 2nd screen. Once there was even a BSOD! Thats because most OpenGL drivers are not used to still handle/redraw window while it is moved/resized/fullscreend. But we are proud how "good" this engine works. It even runs on some matrox cards  You can associate filetypes with it, without installation! It is the little things. IOO You shoud use more than one MediaPlayer. VLC is quiet good on opening "much" :sly: , take the one which best fits the video. Strangely there are even differences in pure DirectShow players :stupid: We just want to become first choice, not the only one :D

PS: to the posturized picture - enable 32 bit color depth on OpenGL - or can you send email with a screenshot - oops yeah you can make screenshots of OpenGL windows ;)

I wasn't even aware there was a news subforum until you asked why your news did not get enabled and then wondered why this thread here too seems to relate to something i couldn't find.

Scary how blind i can walk this forum for years :)

Anyway, sorry but i don't see why i would need another media player. Hope you have fun with it nevertheless.

You are not so blind. News section is new itself i guess... you could need HDngn because of its unique capabilities :D

The idea isn't a bad thing. But:

- It plays 1024x576 XviD file at 8fps for me. Ok I have a buggy IGP chipset on my workstation at work, but still ... Quake 3 is able to run at about 30fps on it ! :p So why doesn't this run as fast ? Probably because the movie is being displayed on a single texture, instead of several smaller ones ?

- Where can I reset the rotation angle and zoom ? I've messed with them during playback, how can I come back to the default values (no rotation and zoom=100%) ?

Q: Seems I need msvcp80.dll and msvcr80.dll what are these Files?
A: This are MS standard files from the VS2005 compiler, get them
from the Internet and place them where the juicyPlayer.exe can
find them!I suggest you simply recommend people to place those files in their %WINDIR%\system32 directory, or the juicyPlayer.exe directory because "where juicyPlayer.exe can find them" doesn't mean much to average joe :p

- When I dragged/dropped my video on the player, some wierd artifacts happened., Then, when I pressed play I needed to seek somewhere else in the video for the picture to appear (else the artifacts would stay on the screen). Look here: http://xasonline.info/juicyPlayer_DnD.png

Phew ... I did encouter quite a lot of problems, but the idea is rather cool :) Keep up the good work !

Edit: my IGP at work is an "Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller"

Changes occured with the way the c runtime libraries are looked for by the loader starting with vs net 2005. It's better to recommend people to download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=32BC1BEE-A3F9-4C13-9C99-220B62A191EE&displaylang=en) rather than placing the dlls no matter where on the system.

As for the player: keep working on it, you'll learn lots of things while doing this and it will all be useful to you on the long term.

The distorted starting picture: This is known. While developing we thought it was fun to see what is in texture memory before using it. No hard task to remove. Guess "Joe" needs to see the first movie frame. This will be changed :goodpost: ! Also thx for the link of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package - just had thoughts about "Joe" trying to find the %WINDIR%\system32 after not finding the "Any"-Key. Redistributable seems to be the cleanest way to explain Joe what he needs :stupid: Current work is writing a complete new Lua-Skin, as the actual juicyPlayer grew with the Engine and is somehow messed up. The next skin will have a reset rotation button, it needs a lot of experience to do it by hand. Rotation is only a Fun right now - there will be even more fun with beta2 :D :D You can restart HDngn as a workaround - does not take to long, does it? Precompile the system.lua with luac.exe to speedup start some milliseconds ;) :scared: :D Several smaller textures will be used in a later version. But to be honest I nerver expect HDngn ever to run really GREAT on a 82845G. There will be a deformation mesh so you can stretch/squeeze the outer part of the picture for 4:3/16:9 conversion and vice versa :o

Ok,
the program works for me.

Only the color are wrong, I mean, a little washed out. Like the textures on the video.

But it works and I can move the image fine.

I'm using one ATI Radeon 9600 XT.

When I'm at fullscreen and press ALT+F4 to close it.. it give me this error:

http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/4351/hderrorja3.th.jpg (http://img377.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hderrorja3.jpg)

It's in portuguese (my windows version) with some english thing. if you don't understand tell me.

About the shortcuts:
mouse scroll up/down = volume up/down.
keyboard up/down = volume up/down
or keyboard moving = screen moving (it will be nice)

juicyPlayer
16th December 2006, 15:59
OK, thx for the keyboard-shortcut suggestions. The Error is just about sometimes not deleting each object in memory when closing. This is solved in our unstable testing version which uses "smart pointers" to delete objects. Don't care about that Error this is not harmfull!

Dear saulob,

please try our latest version v.0.7.3 beta! The Error Message when closing the Program should be gone now. We are further improoving internal program right now before we add new features to is. It does IMO not make sense to overload the program with features if the base is not absolutely clean code. :logfile:

Thanks for the new version. I like how this player makes stuff encoded with older versions of codecs look. I recently watched an entire season of 'Alias' using your player and really liked how smooth the video looked and played.

Things I'd like to see:

Using CoreAVC for h264 decoding and video is flipped on both x and y axis. To correct this I have to use the 'Rotate' function on your player which is very imprecise with a mouse.

Also when viewing widescreen videos on a 4:3 display, the videos start out zoomed in. I have to zoom out to fit the video. Again very imprecise using a mouse. Hope you plan on respecting aspect ratio in future versions.

Regardless, I realize this is a beta and thank you for releasing it to the public. I look forward to seeing more from this player.

First, I'll say that I just love this player. It's great.

As for this latest version, 0.8.1, I like the fact that you have added the shortcuts for play/pause and fullscreen. I did notice though that it's less smooth than before. I mean like when the camera pan accross the scene, that is alot different in this version compared to the 0.7 series.

I just wanted to mention that because I really like the smooth playback of the 0.7 series you released and wonder if you were gonna get that back or not, or maybe give a rendering choice for smoothness in options or something.

Anyway, thanks for this great player and good luck with it's further development.

Just the update I've been waiting for. This new version 0.8.2 again has nice smooth playback.

Just something I've wondered about, do you plan to add any DVD playback support?. I mean by dragging the .ifo file into the player so the movie is played in full.

I've been able to play the first .vob of a movie but not the rest.

This is just something I wonder about and realise you're focused on stability and not feature lists.

Thanks for this new update.

I also like this player and hope you keep the development. It would be great to have a video player that doesn't need VMR9, which it's not very good. For now I don't use it because it appears to me that the colors are not very good. I think you should read this thread about colorspaces RGB and Studio RGB. Maybe thats the problem. Perhaps you could give us the possibility of switching between both colorspaces...

Hi, and yez, v 0.8.1 had a little bug causing a resync of the frames - but it was fixed in 0.8.2 And to the colors: There will be basic capabilitys sufficient for normal Graphic-Cards, and advanced options for shader Capable cards. But currently we are mainly coding a nice GUI...
