AMD is starting to close the gap with Intel and today commercialized 2 new AM2 CPUs: the AMD Athlon64 X2 5400+ and 5600+.
Both run at 2.8Ghz. The 5400+ has a total of 1MB of L2 cache (512KB x 2) while the 5600+ has 2MBs (1MB x2)
5800+ and 6000+ will be available shortly and will be clocked at 3.0Ghz (the same as FX-74).
The new CPUs are all made with the new 0.65 tech but still K8 core.

As far I know, and read earlier, these new Athlon64 CPUs are made in 90 nm process?
65nm isn't that good for 2.8 and 3.0 GHz, yet!

Ahem. Intel proved it with Pentium 4 and D that it's good enough. C2D's good for it too, and will be even better when they move to 45nm. However 45nm is best for 4 cores though, less power emitted then. :)

No, you don't understand me! I mean this: AMD still have to further develop their own 65 nm process, before they release 3.0 GHz processor.
For now, AMD use 90 nm process on Athlon 5400 and 5600+.

from everything i read that is correct. the December 5400+ and 5600+ will be 90nm. however i also read December also sees the 65nm versions of 4000+ to 5000+ range released. then early next year should see the 65nm versions of the 5400+ and 5600+.

AMD are still playing catchup in smaller manufacturing processes though.........

of course. one has to remember the difference in size and resources between AMD and Intel. i have often seen posts where people think AMD should be able to do anything that Intel can as fast etc. kind of ignores reality.
another note i read recently, apparently AMD have started to work with IBM on 45nm process.

Hehe, more collaboration against Intel. Always a good thing. :) Should mean they hit both 45nm and 65nm quicker, and because ATI's part of AMD, that'll transfer to graphics chips too! :D

I went back to the thread to make a correction but you were faster than me.
The 5400+ and 5600+ chips are made on 0.90 tech. 0.65 will be adopted in 2007.

How far off are AMD quad-core CPUs?

and supposedly by the 2nd half of 2007 all AMD cpus are meant to have moved to 65nm.

Some insiders told me that quadcore Barselona release date is August 15.
But, who knows exact date.
