Hello all,
I am trying to play an XviD movie. Well, I assume it is truly an XviD encode (pretry sure it is, it ends with .XviD-ORENJ.avi )
Anyway, unlike the multitude of other XviD content that I play on my computer on a regular basis, this particular file starts up something strange. Whatever player I use (and I have used 3 of the faves listed on this website) all start eating up all the CPU cycles bringing my computer and the general windows interface to a crawl/near halt.
Now, if I click on the movie in Windows File Explorer, I get the same effect, however this time Explorer eats up all the CPU cycles and at that point Task Manager gets so little cycles, that I actually have to kill power to my computer.
Here is the kicker, files that I once watched just fine, now have this problem. And the only thing I can think of that happened significant to my computer is that I upgraded Windows Media Player for Zune support.
My system is XP Professional, and I have uninstalled every codec I could and reinstalled the XviD codec from their site (no help) and also tried installing various revs of ffdshow (currently rev684)
Anyone know what part of the decode process is causing ever increating CPU load to the point of freezing the computer? And why it is only happening on select .avi files, AND ones that played just fine just a couple of months ago?
Help me Doom9-ers, your my only hope!
Edit: Another thought, perhaps it might have something to do with nVidia Forceware drivers? I have 84.69 currently running without any problems anywhere else. Also, I have this SAME exact problem on a copy of Windows Vista (on a test computer), and that does have an nVidia card running in it, but running the latest Beta driver for Vista. Also, installed, it ONLY has the default Windows Media Player (that comes with Vista) and the most current version of ffdshow for decoding.
Edit2: I figured that I would try the program AVIcodec to see if I could get the information about the movie from the source... well... oddly enough AVIcodec will just peg out at 98-99% CPU and run forever slowing down the system as it goes. It seems anything that tries to even access the meta data gets thrown for a loop. I just cannot find other people posting similar issues, yet I see the same behavior on 2 computers...
