Need some filter to mist vhs snow

I saw on television that the vhs "snow" is actually misted and you dont see it like a vhs snow, but some blured horizontal tracks. I have some picture with this horizontal snow, so you can see what I m talking about. I didnt find some corrected broadcast video, but if I find it I will post it here.

There are two types of noise and they are the same for TV and VCR except the tape gain is larger. Chroma noise is seen more with tape, and there is tape drop out. The thing at the the bottom is none of the above, its bad tracking of the VCR and most likey the tape was made on a different machine. No fix except to crop it out.

Those tracks can be found anywhere on frame and can be fixed or can move up or down accross the frame. This happens if the tape has recorded on the different machine (as you said) or if the tape is old (which is in my case). I saw that televisions remove those ugly tracks, so you see them blurred or misted. I am asking if exist some filter which can do that.

No its not the TV that would do that some high end VCRs have dropout compensators which feed a repeat of a scan line above or below or a three frame adverageing to mask over a short streak, but nothging can help what shown at the bottom of your frame.

The easiest way to remove the noise at the bottom of the image would be to simply crop that part off, and then resize the image back to 720x576. Make sure you do your deinterlacing, noise reduction, etc... before you resize. You can do cropping as harsh as (40,30,-40,-30) without getting into the title safe area for PAL sources (the area that is actually shown on a television set).

From my experience I'd say it's a physical error in the tape that's causing this. I can almost hear the sound of wrinkled tape passing the heads. If this is the case, there isn't much to do but to try with other VCR which might handle it better.

Afaik there's not much you can do to correct it in avisynth. I have huge difficulties with even normal "tearing".

edit: Well small parts of it could be smoothed but mostly the streaks are too thick and last tens or hundreds of frames.

I don 't expect some quallity, and I want only to moderate this tearing. which way do you use to do that?

Well, occasionally I do use old RemoveDirt plugin or DeSpot. They arent perfect and there are better ways I'm sure. But "my" tearing is only 1-2lines thick, yours is far worse. Those filters aren't designed for anything of that magnitude.

In your sample there isn't anything to repair it from (atleast by anything I know of) :(

I did download your clip. This is the type of clip that I would tell a client to get me a better source of =) I really don't have any other ideas than what people have already suggested here. If this were me, I'd first try the tape in a few different VCR's to see if I could reduce the amount of tearing that is happening during playback.

I have choosed the worsted case, I know, this surely cannot be repaired, but I saw on TV that cases like this are not repaired but moderated, misted. I dont have any record which can show this, so I can only try to explain how it looks like. Juhok, I have try those filters but nothing differencies are small.

allright, I have done something in photoshop. This is something which looks like that misted tear.

There are two ways to do that. One of those is this: some lines above and under tear are streched in front of tear.

The other way is to took lines where the tear is from previos frame. This is probably the way that televisions are using, but I cannot do something line that using photoshop.
