View Full Version : Split DVD/avi by chapters?

This has probably been asked a thousand times, but I've searched the forum and site high and low, and couldn't find anything of use :(

I'm trying to rip a DVD containing 6 episodes (Tenacious D - HBO Series), but I just can't figure out how to seperate the episodes from each other, so I don't end up with one long avi.

I've ripped a couple of DVDs using GD + VirtualDub, so I'm not completely new to this.

My thought is that it's probably easier to split the avi file after it's encoded rather than ripping the DVD in IFO-mode, splitting it by chapter - encoding the 6 episodes as one gives me the advantage of not having to repeat all the steps of ripping to every episode, plus it'll be easier to hit the 700mb mark. But I have no idea if this is even possible.

Another thing confusing me is the fact that, according to ChapterXtractor, there are 8 chapters - one being cut, another just very short.

If anyone could point me to a guide on how to split a DVD/avi by chapters or just tell me here, it would be great! Been sitting here 5 hours straight, not getting anywhere - it's getting really frustrating!

Hi!

Actually, what you are describing are separate "Titles", rather than separate "Chapters". Click on the following link to (carefully) read a thread that should help you:

Well, by glansing at the thread you pointed me to, it looks like the guy has multiple PGCs - one for each episode. That's not my case.

I only have one PGC which is split in 8 chapters - a chapter for each episode...
I tried encoding the whole thing and then splitting it using Nandub, but as it's only possible to split at a keyframe (and that was way off) that wasn't the solution, and VirtualDub can't handle VBR MP3.

Are we actually talking about two different things, or am I just an idiot who has no idea of what he's doing?

Did you try DVD Decrypter in .IFO mode as one of my posts in that thread suggests? Even if the disk shows one PGC in IFO mode, you can still rip that PGC by chapter, separating the episodes into individual VOB's.
