Nero Recode: resize or not?

I have a question about resizing video when converting DVD to .mp4 avc. Automatic resizing, is it better to use it or not? I'm aiming for quality.
Why I'm asking is because at then end DVD video will still be resized vertically, BUT PC monitor has much higher resolution than DVD anyway so maybe it is better to keep the original size as maybe there are software players that are smart enough not to scale down vertical resolution and then scale up both vertical and horizontal resolution again, but instead scale up horizontal more then vertical?
The end image should look sharper then.

Are there software players which could benefit from higher vertical resolution when viewed in full screen?

I suggest that you don't resize. Make an anamorphic encode containing the original pixels from the DVD and set an aspect ratio on the file. That way you get the full resolution of your source and there is only one resize in the whole rip-encode-view chain, which occurs during final playback.

A 720x480 file should be encoded at 720x480, then resized by the player to e.g. 1024x576 for display on a 1024x768 monitor. That will look better than the alternative approaches.

agree, im completely against resizing. pal video has to stay 720x576 and ntsc 720x480

If I keep original resolution and drop Recode's Auto Resize there will be about 1.4 times more pixels. Should I increase the bitrate to? By how much?

As the saying goes, "it depends", it's not entirely predictable. Encoder behaviour doesn't always scale smoothly, and it depends how much slack there was in your original settings, plus there's also an element of personal taste.

I would probably increase the bitrate, but do a few test encodes on five minute segments and see what you like.
