View Full Version : Why not Minus?

Hey all...I'm not new entirely to the burning process; been doing it for a few years, anyway, but, lately I have been having an issue: when I go to burn a disc, and use a DVD-(minus)R, I get an error message saying that either it's an invalid disc, or that I need to insert a disc, when there is a brand new disc in there. I do not have the problem when I use a DVD+R. Am I missing a setting that needs tweaked, or is this common? I just don't think it should be a common problem. Perhaps the version of Shrink I'm currently using is outdated? (v3.2) Does anyone have an update to share, if that's the case? I also use Sonic Record Now to just do disc-to-disc repro's (burn of a burned), but there's no issue with the Minuses here. Having bumped around on this forum as a "lurker" for quite a while before joining, I know a lot of you are waaaaaaay more educated technologically than I am, so, I'm down for an education. I am sure that there are plenty of more viable burning options, software-wise for me, so any suggestions you all could offer me would be welcomed. Just don't drown me in techno-speak just yet...break me in slowly. Being a gadget guy (dare I say geek?), it frustrates me that I haven't immersed myself in this arena. But, here I go. Thanks again...

Look here...I will honor your request to change what I did if you promise to work on your English. I have used Verbatim, TDK, Sony, Memorex...all with the same result...however, apparently, maybe some of my post was lost in translation...do not inundate me right away with geek-speak...what is firmware? Anyone? Bueller? Please tell me there is humor allowed in this forum....

i will try to use a better english, and your sign doesn't mean anything to me :)
firmware: In a CD recorder, firmware is the programming instructions contained on a ROM chip within the CD recorder which tell the recorder how to respond to commands issued by software. Some firmware is flash-upgradeable, meaning that you can upgrade the firmware by running a piece of software on the computer attached to the recorder. Other firmware is coded into non-rewriteable chip, so the entire chip must be changed in order to upgrade the firmware. (from www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_cdr_glossary.shtml )
or more simple: allows your driver to know what media is inserted and to burn better.
My preferred burning software are ImgBurn and Prassi One. Stable, not bloatware (use google to know this word), fuctional.
And last but not the least could be a problem on your drive
btw: welcome to the forum

Hi!Perhaps the version of Shrink I'm currently using is outdated? (v3.2) Does anyone have an update to share, if that's the case?
1) DVD Shrink v.3.2 is the most current and last version
2) DVD Shrink doesn't have anything to do with burning - If set up properly, it only provides links to burning programs
I get an error message saying that either it's an invalid disc, or that I need to insert a disc
Please describe the sequences of events leading to each of these two different error messages

What is the make and model number of your drive? Doing a search will provide the specs to determine what your drive can and cannot do.

dialysis1 is right, some very old burners only burn DVD+R/RW and others only burn DVD-R/RW.

I also use Sonic Record Now to just do disc-to-disc repro's (burn of a burned), but there's no issue with the Minuses here. This statement appears to indicate that the burner used by "Herdfan" IS capable of burning DVD-R media (Which is the reason I didn't make reference to "older burners, etc.")...

...yeah, that's just it... my computer is only a couple years old with all the bells and whistles...I have not had any issues burning anything in the past; this is a recent, and baffling, problem...which is why I am trying to figure it out...I'll probably just say fekkit and buy only +Rs from now on to avoid the hassles...it's the principle of the matter, being a "problem-solver" like I am...thanks, guys...
