Hello,
I have searched and read several threads in the forums but I'm still confused as the the easiest and best way to convert DVD's to WMV with the 5.1 audio intact. I have tried several comerical products that produce very low quaility video. Some of the information here is way over my head. Maybe some one could point me to the correct thread or a guide that will get me started.
Thanks.

Good luck, I posted here 3 days ago, no response.
This is what I have found on my journey. I am working on it right now actually!
I found this page: http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/32549
seemed to have some good info. I am trying an option that someone posted on there. I already have DVD Shrink, so I am installing VLC whcih is a media codec program. From what the author said, I will be able to view the files that the DVD Shrink program makes iwth the VLC, which in turn will be able to be viewed on my 360. If it works, I don't know; I will keeep you posted.
NO one knows shit about this, everyone is running around and confused to all high hell on how to get this to work. The fools that do get it to work, don't help anyone else out. Good luck man!

I know I am close. I can view movies in .ISO format through VLC. Now I must do 1 of 2 things. Either find a way to stream that file format, which I can't do.
Find a converter that changes .iso formats to a different format.

Any further on finding a way on achiving this? I've been trying to find a way of converting mkv files to WMV with 5.1 sound for playback on my Xbox360.

Hey PSP888, I was just about to respond to your other post. The program you need is Canopus Procoder 2. Although I would convert to MPEG2 and not WMV as I can't seem to get the 5.1 working properly on the 360.

To get this DVD to WMV conversion with free tools and easy, you just need DGIndex, Avisynth, VFAPI Reader Codec, WMEncoder 9 (and the Advanced Profile add-on) and BeSweet.
Video
1) Load the VOB into DGIndex, export the .D2V with the "Demux Track" option enabled.
2) Load the .D2V into Avisynth for advanced processing if you want to.
3) Load the Avisynth .AVS file into VFAPI Reader (if you donīt want advanced processing with Avisynth, ignore step 2 and load the .D2V directly into the VFAPI Reader). Export to .AVI.
4) Start Windows Media Encoder 9, create a New Session. In Properties, choose "Source from: Both device and file" mode.
5) Load the .AVI into the "Video" option. And wait there.
Audio
1) Load the .AC3 into BeSweet. Decode to 16 Bits (Six) Mono Waves.
2) Go back to WMEncoder, in Audio select "Multichannel WAV Source". Click on "Configure" to load each mono file into its respective order.
Now customize the rest of the options in the Properties window to create a compatible WMV file for your XBox.
Cheers.

OK scratch my last comment psp888. I have now done a fully succesfull encode of an X264 file with .DTS in a .MKV container to a HD .WMV with full 5.1 surround sound, that streams beautifully to my xbox 360. In the end I used nothing more than an avs with directshowsource (using the very latest 24/12/06 build of avisynth) into Canopus Procoder. I shall now procede to convert all my movie captures to .wmv.
Hope this is of some help.

Clown shoes,
Is this still working for you as well as you'd hoped? If so, would you mind being a little more descriptive of the process you use? I'm a kind of a noob and didn't really understand what you were talking about with the original post.
Thanks in advance.

Low quaility video?
Why not try WMEA (http://galaxies3000.blogspot.com). Just FYI.

yes, automkv can convert to wmv using wmv7/8/9 or wvc1 , is also supported wma pro up to 5.1 ch. Look in automkv thread (lastest posts) for hint about 5.1 :)

Hiya, old thread, but I thought autoMKV can't encode WMV with 5.1 audio?
