How to repair the header of an unknown format avi?

Hi!

I have an avi videofile, i'd like to make dvd from it, but the converter couldn't recognise the header. The strange thing is almost every player easily plays the video.....
what can i do?

What software, codecs and procedures did you use to create the .AVI?

I didn't create the avi. I got it from a friend. I want to make dvd from it.
I noticed it has no header :(
But I'm sure I wont get the original file...
