This is another poll from a previous thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=118403

Again please select only the ones you really use, not all just because it's cool to support all of them.

spelling.. Matroska

and again... is possible to do pool with one select option... if you allow more than one container the average user will select all.....

Anyway for me is , in preference order

1) matroska
2) avi
3) mp4

i doub't M$ is ever gonna support other formats then WMV, i would first believe it if i see it (except Mpeg-2 and Matroska), but hey Microsoft needs to change alot on their structure in the future to survive so maybe those here are the first steps in the new direction hehe :P

I would definitely like to see Matroska supported that would be pretty cool :)

MP4 would be next on my list.

The Zune software for Windows XP supports MP4 files.

Sorry,

These were all suggestions I got from the previous thread. OGM was not proposed by anyone.

Damn, also forgot to suggest H.264 TS. This is very popular over here in Europe for HD TV. Speaking of HD, MPEG-2 TS is dead.

whether the xbox360 can decode avc or not doesnt depend on the container

Good, I went for "MPEG2 Transport Stream", but was concerned about the MPEG2 term. Thanks, for the clarification.

MPEG2 TS is, unfortunately, going strong in the USA.

MP4 and MKV...
AVI is old... but it's still the most used container...

Here is a good move for Microsoft:

Just match the PS3. Period. Why not? They are already trumpeting this as a "huge" "open" advantage. They learned from the PSP flop.

It's not as open as you think.

My votes are for AVI (XviD), MKV and MP4 (for AVC content). Transport stream support for MPEG2 and AVC would be brilliant. Some of the stuff the BBC are beaming down over DVB is wonderful.

Agreed.

Mp4 is what quicktime, nerodigital, ulead etc export - support reasonable high profile AVC

TS (ATSC/h264)

Sure it would be great to get MKV and avi etc but these are not commercial products and I just don't see MS doing it. Hell, you have to hack MCE2005 to even play MKV files.

So if MPEG4 AVC Main and High profile would play in an MP4 container that would be great. I would love to see AVI (xvid+ac3) but I doubt that one.
