Handy Cam?

Has anyone got one of those handy cams?? the ones where you can record whatever you want and it saves the footage onto a DVD?

I'm thinking of getting one but not sure if its trustworthy or not, i found some info from a sony site, but then again, its sony..not very trustworthy, so some feedbacks from you guys will be gold! :thanks:

I've seen the HandyCam - from what I know of it, it's like the Mavica still camera in that it panders to convenience. The Mavica uses a 1.44" floppy disk; the HandyCam uses either a mini-DVD or a full-size DVD (depending on the model) and records in MPEG-2. There are many tape cameras that record in a much higher quality digital format. The downside is that it must be converted for DVD end use.

My friend has one of these. A Canon DC1 or something. Originally, she wanted a hard drive based camcorder but realized she would be too lazy to actually transfer videos to her PC and author the DVD afterwards. This way, she just records the video and then pop it in their DVD player. Her only complaint is the media is more expensive than regular-sized DVDs and recording time is limited to 30 minutes. Although I think it's most likely possible to take videos longer than 30 minutes but at a lower quality.

Sony camcorders are actually very user-friendly and have very good performance. If you want to buy a DVD-based one, I recommend the DVC-DVD405 (http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-DVD405-Camcorder-Review.htm), although I'd prefer the Panasonic PV-GS500 (http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Panasonic-PV-GS500-Camcorder-Review.htm) or the Sony HDR-SR1 (http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-HDR-SR1-Camcorder-Review.htm) myself. In any case, I'd advice you to create a user at the CamcorderInfo forums and ask there, as there are lots of very knowledgeable people that will help you select a camera that suits your needs.

I had a Hi-8mm camera that would record for 2 hours in it's best mode. Then I bought a Handycam in 2004 that records, in high quality mode, for only 1 hour on mini-dv tape.
Now I am looking at a Panasonic with 3 CCD's which I like in mini-dv.

However, going to a 30 minute miniDVD Video camera is not a good deal for me. To little time per disk, and in recording an event longer than 30 minutes you are going to loose time and footage when changing disks.

There is the convenience factor of the mini-dvd, in that you don't have to convert the footage. But the short record time is a deal killer for me.
