If I have blanked an audio/subtitle stream (not remapped) why are they left in VTSI_MAT?

Typically, the streams I am left with are in position 0 (I keep one audio and one subbie stream and they are usually the top ones in the list), the others being nul. Is it intended that these remnants be left in VTSI_MAT? I can understand if there are "holes", but if not, it seems easy to delete them.

Just makes cycling thru the remote a bit more tedious.

In the past there have been problems with streams that are removed -- not just in DVD-RB, but other packages as well. It's mainly because you'd have to analyze the entire command structure in order to make sure it doesn't result in errors. Unfortunately before it would be completely safe the software would have to pretty much become a virtual machine emulator to make sure you catch everything. Analyzing that stuff is fairly intuitive when you're doing it yourself with something like IFOEdit -- but making a program intuitive is one of those difficult things. After a couple of problem reports early on -- I decided it's best just to leave them because it was taking too much time.

That's been quite some time ago and truthfully I don't even remember specifically what problems occured. I guess it's time I look at it again.

I can see where you're coming from - the IFOs or button commands may contain commands to select a non-existent (removed) stream. I'm sure that was your thinking way back when.

The question is what happens if a non-existent stream is selected due to a button being pressed or a (removed) subpic stream being turned on by default (as is often the case). Of course, this is irrelevant in movie only mode as you can only use the remote and there is no harm in removing the streams then.

It probably doesn't matter if you retain or omit the stream info from VTSI_MAT. If the stream info is retained in VTSI_MAT but the stream empty (as is now the case), you get silence and empty subpics. If VTSI_MAT is clear, you get either the default streams or nothing (as per the current situation).

I suppose many players behave differently. The usual thing is to select the "default stream" - ie stream 0. However, "usual" is not "always" or "within spec".

I don't believe it is an issue because, the remedy for pressing a "bad button" is the same - go back to the menu and select the proper stream that has been kept (or edit the menu in the first place or use the remote to turn an offending subpic off). However, there may be some questions raised in the forum and you may not want that.

Finally, and only for info purposes, many other packages do this, but that is no justification for DVDRB doing so.
