The Inquirer had article today called "How a codec will save the telcos" :
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36034

Basically a company named Even Technologies Inc claim to have a codec that outperforms Mpeg4 (sounds like something I have heard many times before) and using it will save the telcos
http://www.eventechnologiesinc.com/technology.html

It's called the PSI codec.
Have anyone heard of it before ?
If so , what is your opinion of it ?

I'm currently watching the demos on their website and so far I'm not impressed.

Now it's not utter crap like some of the codecs that are claimed to be the digital messiah of codecs , but I don't see how this beats Mpeg4.

Looked at one sample:
11.5mb, 1:33secs long. 384x256 res

So it's about 1Mbit file at such a low resolution. So, not surprisingly, nothing to blow you away.

EDIT: The seabiscuit trailer is a lower bitrate and higher res and looks considerably worse because of it. I think H264's crown is quite safe. ;)

I see six clips on their site all of which are 640x352 and most are around 700kb/s , with the exception of what seems to be the entire Final Fantasy movie (not just a clip .. the entire thing).

So where did you find the low-res clip ?

After seeing all of the clips that would load , I can only agree.
In fact , even Xvid seems superior to this , so comparing it to H264 is just cruel ;)

I'm going to write this off as yet another marketing lie for an inferior codec.

@CeeJay: The video on the main page marked "PSI_V Trailer" with the little "Watch" link underneath. A direct link to the file would be: http://www.eventechnologiesinc.com/videos/psi_trailer.mov

TBH i never look at video demo's for codecs as i know that they normally only select sequences that make there codec look good.

In all honesty correct me if i am wrong but this is probably another DCT based codec and to beat h.264 your going to need to use wavelets or something completely different as your not going to beat h.264 at its own game.
