View Full Version : Lame VBR Encoding?

The new lame vbr settings do a great job of rate control. For example, it can tell if there is very little audio frequencies being used and lower the bitrate. And for silence, the bitrate WILL go down to 32kbps... finally!

Is there any way to get Vdub to encode in Lame VBR in Full Processing? Or must it be done with another program and then muxed?

From the tutorials I've seen I believe you can select:
Audio > full stream processing,
then: Audio > Compression > Lame-3,
then choose the compression settings in either VBR or CBR from the menu.

Because VD doesn't handle VBR well, you may need to use VDM and select Nandub mode when you open your file.

Vlada has given instructions on installing Lame-3 into VD / VDM:

I haven't tried this yet, so I may be wrong.

Alternatively you can use Gordian Knot. BeSweet will encode the audio (and VDubMod the video) and mux it.

Be sure to replace the lame_enc.dll with version 3.97 (or a newer beta version) in the \GordianKnot\BeSweet directory. It's available on rarewares.org

Of course you can also just encode the audio with BeSweet and not use Gordian Knot and mux it in yourself with VDUB(Mod)

I am already using lame 3.97 ACM, and there are options for CBR or some ABR. But the setting I am really looking for is VBR like this: -V 9 --vbr-new. I have never seen VBR in Vdub or VDM. These are the NEW VBR settings for Lame that I was speaking of.

Thanks

Keep in mind that VDub doesn't even claim to handle MP3 VBR, and vDubMod works with VBR, but has this question in the FAQ section of its help file: "Why is using vbr mp3 in avis a bad idea?" AFAIK what you are looking for doesn't exist and isn't a priority for any of the developers. vDubMod has seen very little development at all, and is well behind vDub. So I don't think you will see what you are looking for any time soon in vDub or vDubMod. Your best bet is to try some other tool.

This (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=852066#post852066) won't fix your problem, but you might want to check it out anyway. It looks like it fixes a couple of of minor bugs at least.

Still, I'd recommend compressing the audio outside vDub/vDubMod. You can't mux it with vDub, but vDubMod seems to work mostly OK. (I've had some problems, but don't know if it was vDubMod's fault or bad source material.) If you don't need to edit the video, you could mux with AVIMuxGUI (http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/)AVIMuxGUI, or some other tool instead.

Thanks. I already have a good external encoder that will do what I want. I just wondered if there were some way to do it in 1 pass.

I think I found my solution. I can do this with scripting from DubMan, awesome!
