Has anyone had any experience with this multimedia player?
Mvix MV-5000U Multimedia Player (http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/drives/7b1c/)
It's basically a hard drive enclosure that plays video and audio files.

I'm considering to get this, all reviews I've read so far are pretty positive. However, it doesn't seem to support x264, H.264, or AAC at the moment, though the website (http://www.mvixusa.com/product.php?product=mv5000u) mentions that you can upgrade firmwares in order to support the latest codecs.

So I'm wondering if anyone here ever tried this product or knows how active the company is in updating the firmware.

From a quick Google search, it seems that this player uses a Sigma EM8511 chip, so H264/AVC is out of this player's reach, no matter how quickly firmware updates are released for it.

At the moment, the only player that can handle AVC content is the Playstation3.

I see. Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll wait a bit more for players that will support H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. At this moment it's not a must have, but next year I might regret not having AVC support.

Yep... for the $200.00 price tag, it's way too over-priced for it's specification!

Indeed, there are a few devices fitted with Sigma's high-def (input) capable EM8620L chip-set, for similar money.

Which sadly dont support MPEG-4 (Part 10) AVC either...

If you want something right away, the Philips DVP5140 is a nice little machine: great DiVX support, decent Xvid support, region free and a killer price - $50 at Wal-Mart.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I already have a DVP-642, so DVP-5140 will only be a small upgrade for me.

I like the idea that I can carry the hard drive enclosure to watch my media in other places; however. It is quite pricey, pus the HDD it will be around $250. And without AVC capabilities, it's a big letdown for me.
