muxing vbr mp3 audio doesnt work in VdubMod

I made a backup of a DVD in 2 steps

first made the audio file using lame3.97 -V 9 switch

then made the xvid avi using gordion knot and virtualdubmod

after that i tried to mux the 2 with vdubmod but exactly halfway through the audio cuts out

what am i missing?

Before multiplexing, have you played the audio file to make certain that you've captured the entire soundtrack?

yes the mp3 file is fine.

i suspect its something to do with using lame's true VBR mode because i notice that gordion knot always uses the -abr switch which I believe is inferior.

Is this a known issue?
