Uninstalling XviD from Installer screws up IntelliType Pro Volume Management?

Hey All,

Before posting this in public, I have tried this over 10 times in different Windows installations and the result is the same.

It took me a while to filter it down to one thing and it was surprisingly/unexpectedly the action of uninstalling XviD.

Repro Steps:

Install IntelliType Pro
Install Koepi's XviD
Uninstall XviD from Add/Remove Programs
Reboot
Volume Management from Keyboard is screwed up.

I just want to know if this has happened to you.

Wouldn't know why de/installing Xvid should force such a behaviour.


But by now, I'm ready to expect any kind of mad behaviour from MS's "IntelliXYZ" software: In my company, recently we had a fresh install of WinXP on most systems...
I'm using an IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0, so I went ahead, downloaded & installed IntelliPoint v6.02 Software ("IP602_32Deu.exe", acc. to the language version of our XP installation.)

--> Custom settings of mouse keys did not work, whatever I tried.

Ah, funny, but okay then ... went ahead, downloaded & installed prior version IntelliPoint v5.5 Software ("IP55_32Deu.exe", acc. to the language version of our XP installation.)

Ah, funny, but okay then ... went ahead, digged a 5 years old IntelliPoint v4.0 software out of my software archive, installed that one, and ...

all custom mouse settings are working like they should.

@didée: newer intellipoint version do not support older mices...

@McoreD: i dont know what koepi installer script does, but my MS KB volume management works like a charme after installing and uninstalling xvid (koepi's build).

Sharktooth, that's really lucky. It was bugging me in XP/Server 2003, now doing the same in Vista. All works beautifully until I uninstall/reinstall XviD using its installer. Just regsvr32 xvid.ax would do no harm. So it's really the installer messing with some registry.

Weird. I cannot imagine how the installer should be capable of doing such things. Which version did you use? Maybe the old installer from xvid-1.1.0-31122005.exe which was broken and removed all your codec entries upon uninstall? _That_ might have such an side-effect, but not in vista as there the registry is virtualized.

This is very likely caused by a deleted "drivers32" registry key. That will break the system sound.

@Koepi, one thing I know for sure is that it's the XviD installer that comes with AutoGK.

Install AutoGK with XviD
Uninstall XviD or Update XviD and you are screwed with Volume Management button.

Doesn't matter if you have IntelliType Pro installed or not at this point. If you install IntelliType after this, it will still cause the problem.

@clsid, thanks, will look into drivers32 reg key to see if I can restore broken setting.

I am not keen on testing this anymore because if the only way of reverting back is restoring an previous Symantec BESR image.

I will surely keep posted with latest findings. Any ideas are welcome always.

Before deleting the old binaries, thought I should conclude in this post.

These installers cause the problem above (upon uninstalling):

XviD-1.0.3-20122004
XviD-1.1.0-30122005
AutoGordianKnot.2.27.Setup

These installers are untested:

XviD-1.1.2-01112006
XviD-1.2.-127-25022006

These installers don't cause the problem:

AutoGordianKnot.2.40.Setup

The best news is that the latest IntelliType Pro 6.1 installer can fix all these previous broken settings.
